Beberapa kali program untuk peduli gizi digencarkan, salah satunya adalah pemerintah melalui Peraturan Presiden nomor 42 tahun 2013 tentang Gerakan Nasional Percepatan Perbaikan Gizi yang fokus pada 1000 Hari Pertama Kehidupan (HPK). Gerakan ini mengedepankan upaya bersama antara pemerintah dan masyarakat melalui penggalangan partisipasi dan kepedulian pemangku kepentingan secara terencana dan terkordinasi untuk percepatan perbaikan gizi masyarakat dengan prioritas pada 1000 HPK. Di dalam dunia pesantren, gizi kurang mendapat perhatian. Padahal, pemenuhan gizi dalam makanan sehari-hari menjadi daya ungkit untuk mendapatkan sumber daya manusia yang berkualitas. Pada 2013, Pesantren Tebuireng melalui Sang Pengasuh menyadari sesuatu saat usai shalat berjamaah di Masjid Pesantren Tebuireng. Gus Solah (pengasuh Pesantren Tebuireng) dikerumuni ratusan santri yang ingin mencium tangan. Tradisi pesantren mewajibkan murid untuk mencium tangan guru dan ustad. Namun, yang menarik perhatian saat bersalaman itu ialah adanya banyak santri Tebuireng yang tubuhnya pendek (kontet), padahal usia mereka minimal 12 tahun. Bahkan tinggi mereka tidak lebih dari cucu beliau yang masih SD. Kemudian Gus Solah menulis mengenai permasalahan gizi itu di Harian Kompas dan dibaca oleh para dokter gizi dari Persatuan Dokter Gizi Medis Indonesia (PDGMI) dan Persatuan Dokter Gizi Klinik Indonesia (PDGKI). Lalu, datang dua orang ke Tebuireng memberikan pelatihan dan bantuan untuk mengatasi kekurangan gizi ini dan sampai saat ini terus dikembangkan bersama oleh Puskestren (Pusat Kesehatan Pesantren) Tebuireng, Jasa Boga Tebuireng, dan lembaga lain yang terkait. Pada tahun 2014, Gus Solah diundang ke Makasar dalam sebuah acara gizi nasional dan Tebuireng menjadi satu-satunya perwakilan dari pesantren. Tentu ini bukan menjadi ajang pamer, tapi menjadi satu pemantik pesantren lainnya untuk turut berjuang bersama memperhatikan persoalan gizi para santri. Menyambut Hari Gizi Nasional (HGN) ke-57 tahun 2017 ini, Majalah Tebuireng mencoba kembali Membangkitkan semangat dan tentu saja tindakan nyata peduli gizi. Kami juga berharap pemerintah memberikan porsi kepedulian yang nyata dan cukup terhadap perkembangan gizi masyarakatnya di lingkungan pesantren.
