As a child, Luke Turner was obsessed with the Second World War. He spent hours watching Sunday war films, poring over stories of derring-do and relishing in birthday trips to air museums. Lying in bed beneath Airfix fighter planes suspended from his ceiling, he would think about the men that might sit in their cockpits, and whether he could ever be one of them. Now, as an adult who has come to terms with a masculine identity and sexuality that is often erased from dominant military narratives, he undertakes a refreshingly honest analysis of his fascination with the war. In Men at War, Turner looks beyond the increasingly retrogressive and jingoistic ideal of a Britain that never was to recognise men of war as creatures of love, fear, hope and desire. From writers, filmmakers, artists and ordinary men - including those in his own family - Turner assembles a broad cast of characters to bring the war to life. There are conscientious objectors, a bisexual Commando, a pacifist poet who flew for Bomber Command, a transgender RAF pilot, a soldier who suffered in Japanese POW camps and later in life became an LGBT+ activist, and those who simply did what they could just to survive and return home to a complicated peace. As the conflict moves beyond living memory and the last veterans leave us, we are in danger of missing the opportunity to gain a true understanding of this rich history. By exploring a wartime experience that embraces sex, lust and the body as much as tactics and weaponry, Turner argues that the only way we can really understand the Second World War is to get to grips with the complexity of the lives and identities of those who fought and endured it.

"Men at War" edited by Ernest Hemingway is an imposing anthology (over 1000 pages and over 80 stories) of men in battle conditions. The range of time is from Biblical to the middle of World War II, when it was published. The bulk of the conflicts described come from the Napoleonic wars and World War I. Most are true, first person accounts, but some fiction is included. In all cases the effect that war has on the human condition, both good and bad, is effectively described. A truly awesome collection on a single theme. As with most anthologies, there are a few stories that do not inspire, but overall, a fine reading experience. I was first introduced to the book in the HBO series "Pacific" as being carried by a beloved commander who was killed. One of life's ironies. I love Ernest Hemingway's writing style and the history of war, so I was very happy with this book. I especially like the amount of research put into historical data I gleaned from this book. I wish I would have known about it when I was in school for a report or review. E. Joseph Anna The deepest story in this one goes all the way back to King David of Israel with the fight to the death with Goliath of the Philistines. A truly epic work. Author Glenn Langohr

June, 1941. Determined that the United States will be prepared for war, Franklin D. Roosevelt and "Wild Bill" Donovan orchestrate the most complex espionage organization in history, the Office of Strategic Services. Young and daring, the OSS assemble under a thin camouflage of diplomacy and then disperse throughout the world to conduct their operations. And no operation is more critical than the one being conducted by hotshot pilot Richard Canidy and his half-German friend Eric Fulmar: to secure the rare ore that will power a top-secret weapon coveted on both sides of the Atlantic--the atomic bomb.

This book is an innovative collection of original research which analyzes the many varieties of post-conflict masculinity. Exploring topics such as physical disability and psychological trauma, and masculinity and sexuality in relation to the "feminizing" contexts of wounding and desertion, this volume draws together leading academics in the fields of gender, history, literature, and disability studies, in an inter- and multi-disciplinary exploration of the conditions and circumstances that men face in the aftermath of war.

With roots going back to Cecil Rhodes' buccaneering Pioneers, Stannard, like many of his countrymen, was born and bred to fight against the odds as a soldier defending a country at war with the world. Never frightened to lead, he tackled his foe with skill, incredible courage and almost unbelievable good cheer. Serving in both the SAS and the Selous Scouts, before joining the South African Recces, Stannard fought alongside the best and the bravest black and white soldiers of the Bushwar including legends of the conflict like Chris Schulenburg, Martin Chikondo and Darrell Watt. In the process, he carved a name for himself as one of the greatest fighting men of his generation. If you have read "A Handful of Hard Men" by Hannes Wessels, then you will thoroughly enjoy "Men Of War". Strong stuff, based on the experiences of some extraordinary soldiers. One of the best ina long time. - Al J. Venter
