Men beyond revolving doors illustrate how hotel walls have the power to bring out its guests’ true character. As Sally, the hotel receptionist, scrupulously yet obscurely unfolds each of her guests’ cloaks-and-daggers, she barely realizes the changes it had on her. In the industry that embraced her, it is only a choice of submitting to it or betraying it - either way, these changes reached too grave of an extent that it may be too late for her to hold back.

After the veritable hype concerning postmodernism in the 1980s and early 1990s, when questions about when it began, what it means and which texts it comprises were apt to trigger heated discussions, the excitement has notably cooled down at the turn of the century. Voices are now beginning to be heard which seem to suggest a new episteme in the making which points beyond postmodernism, while it remains at the same time very uncertain whether what appears as newness is not rather a return to traditional concepts, theoretical premises, and authorial practices. Contributors to this volume propose to explore new openings and recent developments in anglophone literatures and cultural theories which engage with issues seen to be central in the construction of a postmodern paradigm, but deal with them in ways that promise new openings or a new Zeitgeist.

The profile of prisoners across many Western countries is strikingly similar – 95% male, predominantly undereducated and underemployed, from the most deprived neighbourhoods. This book reflects on how similarly positioned men configure masculinities against global economic shifts that have seen the decimation of traditional, manual-heavy industry and with it the disruption of long-established relations of labour. Drawing on life history interviews and classical ethnography, the book charts a group of men’s experiences pre, during and post prison. Tracking the development of masculinities from childhood to adulthood, across impoverished streets, ‘failing’ schools and inadequate state ‘care’, the book questions whether this proved better preparation for serving prison time than working in their local, service-dominated, labour markets. It integrates theories of crime, geography, economics and masculinity to take into account structural and global economic shifts as well as individual long-term perspectives in order to provide a broad examination on pathways to prison and post prison.

Sarah Fortune inherited her flat from one of her many lovers. Now a son has appeared claiming it is his, morally if not strictly legally, and he is using illegal means to persuade Sarah to give it up: abusive letters threatening her personal harm. As it becomes more difficult to ignore these missives, Sarah comes across Henry, a timid, lonely man whose upstairs neighbour is using every trick in the racketeer landlord's book to make him leave his home: litter in the shared hallway, continual noise, poison set out for his cat. It seems that if they swap accommodation for a while they may be able to deal with each other's problems. But these two strangers have unknown connections in common: a well-meaning widow, a struggling therapist, and a man who sets fire to other people's property for a living . . .

'A gorgeously entertaining, provocative book' Chicago Tribune It is 4am when the ambulance comes to take the man's wife away - although no-one has called it, and there is nothing wrong with her. As he sets out to find her, he finds himself in the corridors of a vast underground hospital, where he encounters sinister medics, freakish sexual experiments and the unmistakable feeling of being watched. Even when he is suddenly appointed as the hospital's chief of security, reporting to a man who thinks he is a horse, he will not give up his search. Secret Rendezvous is a nightmarish satire of bureaucracy, medicine and modern life. 'Reads as if it were the collaborative effort of Hieronymus Bosch, Franz Kafka and Mel Brooks' Chicago Sun Times

The crime that led to “the first significant challenge to capital punishment in Georgia” and inspired the Grateful Dead song “Dupree’s Diamond Blues” (Atlanta INtown). On December 15, 1921, gunshots echoed across Atlanta’s famous Peachtree Street moments before a handsome young man darted away from Kaiser’s Jewelers. Frank DuPre left in his wake a dead Pinkerton guard and a missing ring. As Christmas shoppers looked on in panic, he raced through the Kimball House Hotel and shot another victim. The brazen events terrified a crime-filled city already on edge. A manhunt captured the nineteen-year-old, unemployed DuPre, who faced a quick conviction and a hanging sentence. Months of appeals pitted a prosecutor demanding some “good old-fashioned rope” against “maudlin sentimentalists” and “sob sisters.” Author Tom Hughes recounts the true harrowing story behind the legend of one of the last men hanged in Atlanta. “Revisits the crime, the trial, and the execution that captured newspaper headlines for months.”—WABE.org

Jeremiah was once the most feared name in the world for anyone who had heard of him. He was the ruthless general of the demonic hordes on Earth. Now, he works for the other side. Trying to reform, the demon is now working with the prophets of the world to train some of their best and brightest youth. Raul Habsburg is one of the most powerful members of a secretive organization called The Society of Minds. For time immemorial, the Society has striven to stay hidden, while promoting the intellectual growth of humanity. Like the world’s prophets, they have supernatural powers that set them apart from the rest of mankind, as well as help them overcome their enemies: evil and ignorance. Unlike the prophets, the Society doesn’t have a devotion to a deity, but their enemies are, nevertheless, the same. Though they have never met, Jeremiah and Raul have a common foe. A new enemy, going by the name of Adversary, is forming a demonic army of his own to fill the void of power in the ranks of the fallen. It falls on both Jeremiah and Raul to investigate this situation for their own sake and the sakes of those whom they’ve sworn to protect. Despite a need to stay hidden, Raul and Jeremiah must step into the light to face Adversary and keep him from being able to create his demonic army. But neither of them has any idea what to expect as they step Beyond the Shadows.

Beyond Marx written by and has been published by BRILL this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-11-21 with Political Science categories.

Capitalism has proven much more resilient than Marx anticipated, and the working class has, until now, hardly lived up to his hopes. The Marxian concept of class rests on exclusion. Only the ‘pure’ doubly-free wage-workers are able to create value; from a strategic perspective, all other parts of the world’s working populations are secondary. But global labour history suggests, that slaves and other unfree workers are an essential component of the capitalist economy. What might a critique of the political economy of labour look like that critically reviews the experiences of the past five hundred years while moving beyond Eurocentrism? In this volume twenty-two authors offer their thoughts on this question, both from a historical and theoretical perspective. Contributors include: Riccardo Bellofiore, Sergio Bologna, C. George Caffentzis, Silvia Federici, Niklas Frykman, Ferruccio Gambino, Detlef Hartmann, Max Henninger, Thomas Kuczynski, Marcel van der Linden, Peter Linebaugh, Ahlrich Meyer, Maria Mies, Jean-Louis Prat, Marcus Rediker, Karl Heinz Roth, Devi Sacchetto, Subir Sinha, Massimiliano Tomba, Carlo Vercellone, Peter Way, Steve Wright.

Beyond the Comfort Zone, set in Yunnan province, China, and in Thailand, concludes the Laney and Cade Trilogy, Journeys Through Scenic Chaos. Convinced by their longtime friend, Evelyn Mc Duff, to join a tour through minority villages near Lijiang, Laney and Cade soon find themselves on separate paths. Laney stays in Lijiang to give moral support to the aunt of a young tour guide who has gone missing. Once again, Laney's helpful nature puts her in danger. Cade and a friend pursue a man they suspect of having bilked them out of the money they have invested to promote his small hotels. An American expatriate, a former scholar now propelled by greed and a desire for vengeance against a former lover, links Laney and Cade and their associates to a scheme that attracts the attention of a government agent and causes Cade to face arrest unless he helps to apprehend the perpetrator of the "best sleazy business of the day."
