North Korea, as a nation, has been going down the road of self-discovery since they were severed from South Korea in 1953. Trying to identify themselves as a world class nation, they have built one of the larger armies in today’s world. This is the road they seem to feel must be taken to attain international stature. Most of the rest of the world sees it differently. The United States of America becomes aware of North Korea’s preparations to attack their homeland and are working toward a better dialog with the them. Having no success with diplomacy, the United Nations initiate sanctions to pressure the leaders of North Korea to back down with their nuclear and missile development. They do not. Sanctions present hardships for the people, but the leaders think they can force the world to accept them as a nation and they ignore them.

This book deals with the political and legal issues of the Korean question in the United Nations. This is the first in-depth analysis of the meaning and effects of the Korean problem in UN politics. The book discusses the UN's role in the management of the Korean problem, the effects of the Korean war, South-North Korea's rivalry over the issues of their legitimacy and international representation, the problems of the Korean armistice agreement, and prospects for the four-party peace talks. It also examines North Korea's nuclear program and structural famine as the new concerns of the international community in the post Cold-War era. This study is intended as one of the important readings for researchers, scholars and students in the fields of international law, international organizations and international relations.

North Korea has remained a thorn in the side of the United States ever since its creation in the aftermath of the Korean conflict of 1950 - 1953. Crafting a foreign policy that effectively deals with North Korea, while still ensuring stability and security on the Korean Peninsula - and in Northeast Asia as a whole - has proved very challenging for successive American administrations. In the wake of ruler Kim Jong-il's death in December 2011, analysts and policymakers continue to speculate about the effect his last years as leader will have on the future of North Korea. America S Commitment To South Korea written by Joo-Hong Nam and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1986-03-27 with Political Science categories.

The book analyses the strategic rationale of the American security commitment to South Korea in the light of the palpable failure of containment strategy in Indo-China. During the 1970s the dilemma confronting successive American administrations was that, whilst wishing to maintain their old commitment to South Korea, they had no desire to preside over another Vietnam. Military commitment and political support were necessarily disengaged, and the Nixon doctrine served as both the end and the means of containment strategy in Asia. The study identifies the principal conditions that have influenced changing American perspectives on South Korea, and examines some of the general problems of collective security in the region. Unique in the direct engagement of China, the Soviet Union and the United States, the security position of South Korea bears directly upon the achievement of peace and stability throughout East Asia.
