In Amok, pubblicato nel 1922, rivive il racconto febbrile e delirante di un viaggiatore di ritorno su una nave dall’Oceano Indiano: è la scoperta non già di un esotismo affascinante ma di una «terra maledetta» dove «prima o poi tutti, in un modo o nell’altro, si beccano la loro dose di follia». Pubblicato nel 1911 e salutato da uno straordinario successo, Bruciante segreto, in un vorticoso crescendo, tratteggia il cupo, violento passaggio dall’infanzia all’età adulta di Edgar, ragazzino irrequieto e solitario, che accoglie con gioia le offerte di amicizia di un giovane barone, credendole sincere: in realtà l’uomo finge di interessarsi a lui solo per sedurre la madre. Stefan Zweig (Vienna, 1881–Petrópolis, 1942) crebbe nella Vienna di fine Ottocento, ed esordì giovanissimo sulla scena letteraria. Autore di raffinata formazione culturale e artistica, scrisse novelle, romanzi, poesie, opere teatrali, saggi letterari e biografie storiche, e conobbe uno straordinario successo mondiale tra gli anni Venti e Trenta. Dopo l’ascesa al potere del nazismo, Zweig – le cui opere furono bruciate nei roghi dei libri del 1933 – dovette rifugiarsi, essendo di origine ebrea, in Inghilterra, poi a New York e infine in Brasile. Morì suicida nel febbraio del 1942. Delle sue opere la Newton Compton ha pubblicato Il mondo di ieri, Novella degli scacchi - Paura - Lettera di una sconosciuta e Mendel dei libri - Amok - Bruciante segreto.
