Adah Isaacs Menken was the most highly paid and most scandalous stage performer of the 1860s. She is also one of the most fascinating and unconventional writers in American literary history, and the first to follow the revolution in poetry started by Whitman's Leaves of Grass. This edition presents, for the first time, a generous selection of Menken's uncollected poems and essays, along with the first edition of Infelicia (1868), her only book. Also included is a range of carefully selected appendices that help contextualize Menken's writings in terms of theater, Judaism, Bohemianism, women's rights, and women writers.

Performing Menken uses the life experiences of controversial actress and poet Adah Isaacs Menken to examine the culture of the Civil War period and what Menken's choices reveal about her period. It explores the roots of the cult of celebrity that emerged from crucible of war. While discussing Menken's racial and ethnic claims and her performance of gender and sexuality, Performing Menken focuses on contemporary use of social categories to explain patterns in America's past and considers why such categories appear to remain important.

"Adah Isaacs Menken, also known as Ada Bertha Théodore and Ada C. McCord (June 15, 1835? August 10, 1868), was an American actress, painter and poet, the highest earning actress of her time.[1] She was best known for her performance in the melodrama Mazeppa, with a climax that featured her apparently nude and riding a horse on stage. After great success for a few years with the play in New York and San Francisco, she appeared in a production in London and Paris, from 1864 to 1866. She was so well known internationally at the time that she was called "the Menken". After a brief trip back to the United States, she returned to Europe. She became ill within two years and died in Paris at age 33"--Wikipedia.

Excerpt from Infelicia Adah returned to New Orleans with the intention of giving up the stage and devoting her attention to liter ature. She began by studying assiduously the German language and reading the classic authors, supporting her self, meanwhile, by teaching French and Latin in a young ladies' seminary, and by contributing to the New Orleans papers. A volume of poems which she published at about this time met with considerable popular favor. But her restless spirit could not find peace. She te turned to Texas, and at Galveston, on the 3d of April, 1856, she married Alexander Isaac Menken, a musician. Her husband was a Jew, and she herself adopted his faith, changing her name from Adelaide to Adah. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Adah Isaacs Menken: Illustrated Biography Adah Isaacs Menken - "the world's delight," as Swinburne described her - was one of the most remarkable beauties of the 'sixties. She was well-known as a dancer, circus rider, actress, and male impersonator; she was notorious as having had four husbands; she was conspicuous in the world of letters partly by her association with various prominent English and French writers and partly by her volume of poems, entitled "Infelicia," which she was permitted to dedicate to Charles Dickens. I desire to thank Mr. George R. Sims, and a friend in New York, Mr. H. J. Ketcham, for generous help in the preparation of this sketch of her romantic career.
