Wird das Geschehen um die Tötung von Osama Bin Laden am 02. Mai 2011 oder die Festnahme und anschließende Exekution am 30. Dezember 2006 von Saddam Hussein betrachtet, so wurde in den Medien von einer "menschenunwürdigen" Behandlung gesprochen. Obwohl der Terroristenführer und der irakische Diktator viele grausame und barbarische Taten begangen haben, wird ihnen trotzdem durch die Medien und die Menschenrechtsaktivisten eine menschenwürdige Behandlung zugesprochen. Ein weiteres Beispiel, bei dem fast täglich die Menschenwürde in Bezug gebracht wird, ist der derzeitige Krieg im nordafrikanischen Staat Libyen. Machthaber Muammar al Gaddafi geht hier mit absoluter Grausamkeit und Brutalität gegen sein eigenes Volk vor. Da dieses Vorgehen von den Spitzen der Nato als menschenunwürdig erachtet wurde, beschlossen sie das Volk mit Hilfe militärischer Luftschläge im Kampf gegen das Regime zu unterstützen. Ein Großteil des libyschen Volkes, welches aus diesen Gründen versucht, auf schnellstem Weg das Land zu verlassen, landet mit Schiffen in Italien, wo sie vorerst in Flüchtlingslager untergebracht werden. Dies ist jedoch von Seiten der Europäischen Union (EU) nicht gewollt. "Bomben ja, Flüchtlinge nein. Das ist die Botschaft, die von der EU versandt wird." (Göweil 2011: 1). Dieses Verhalten wird wiederrum von den Medien als menschenunwürdige Politik gesehen.

This volume addresses the complex interplay between the conditions of an agent’s personal autonomy and the constitution of her self in light of two influential background assumptions: a libertarian thesis according to which it is essential for personal autonomy to be able to choose freely how one’s self is shaped, on the one hand, and a line of thought following especially the seminal work of Harry Frankfurt according to which personal autonomy necessarily rests on an already sufficiently shaped self, on the other hand.
