This book examines the early identification of children and adolescents with mental health and substance use problems in order to provide guidance, tools, and resources for early identification -- including a compendium of the most developmentally, culturally, and environmentally appropriate screening instruments. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, which evaluates the evidence on the efficacy of various preventive practices, has recommended screening adolescents for depression in primary care; however, it has not yet reviewed the evidence for general, multi-condition screening instruments, such as those discussed in this book. However, it is likely that many families -- especially those whose children fall into groups at elevated risk for mental health or substance use problems -- would prefer to know as soon as possible if their child or adolescent shows indications of these problems. Early identification and intervention would allow caregivers to promptly address any identified problems. Programs and services for youths who are at elevated risk for mental health and substance use problems should, as much as possible, offer caregivers the opportunity to identify any such problems. Because caregivers are the decision makers for their children, the guide emphasises that informed parental consent must always be obtained before any formal identification or screening process is conducted; it also reinforces that parental involvement from the beginning is appropriate and encouraged.

Understanding Mental Health Problems of Children and Adolescents is a practical guide to identifying, diagnosing, and treating mental health and substance abuse challenges in children and adolescents. In the book, Kirstin Painter and Maria Scannapieco take on ADHD, childhood trauma, anxiety disorders, oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, bipolar disorder, the spectrum of schizophrenia, psychosis, and substance abuse. For each of these, they provide definitions as well as early signs of detection, symptoms, diagnoses, and even treatment options. In doing this, they emphasize the importance of working with youth and caregivers and why social workers should address mental health issues like these using a strengths- and trauma-informed perspective. Painter and Scannapieco break each diagnosis into two chapters to ensure they give adequate coverage for each diagnosis. The first chapter for each discusses and includes the DSM criteria, the biological aspects of the disorder, differential diagnosing, and a case study applying the diagnostic criteria. The second presents evidence-based treatments and medications and follows-up the preceding case study with a discussion of the outcomes. This new edition includes discussions of the 21st Century Cures Act, cultural humility, techniques for intervention with youth, childhood trauma, and more. The final chapters discuss the importance of collaboration between schools, mental health providers, child protective services, and families. Promoting positive mental health in youth from a system of care perspective, readers will learn about the mental health issues facing children and adolescents as well as the relevant definitions, etiology, and evidence-based treatments to ensure they can gather enough information to make a proper diagnoses.

Adolescent Mental Health written by Terje Ogden and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-30 with Psychology categories.

Adolescence is a period of rapid growth, maturing individuality, vulnerabilities and fortitude. Fortunately, most youths go through this period of life in a healthy way, but some do not. Adolescent Mental Health: Prevention and Intervention is a concise and accessible overview of our current knowledge on effective treatment and prevention programs for youths who have developed, or are at risk of developing, mental health problems. Ogden and Hagen’s introduction to "what works" in the promotion of adolescent mental health addresses some of the most common mental health problems among young people, and how these problems might be prevented or ameliorated through professional and systematic efforts. The volume illustrates contemporary and empirically supported interventions and prevention efforts through a series of case studies, and covers some of the most prevalent mental health conditions affecting today’s youth; externalizing, internalizing and drug use problems. Within an ecological and transactional framework, the book discusses how psychopathologies may develop and the risks and protective factors associated with these. The problem-oriented perspective on risk and mental health problems is combined with a focus on social competence and other protective factors. Adolescent Mental Health: Prevention and Intervention will be essential reading for students and practitioners in the fields of child welfare and mental health services, and any professionals working with adolescents at risk of developing mental health problems.
