Depending on the health profile of the traveller, the type of travel to be undertaken, and the place of transit and destination, travellers may face various health risks during travel. The International travel and health collection serves as an entry point for other World Health Organization (WHO) publications that provide further information. Its primary target audience is travel health practitioners and travel health professionals, who provide health advice to travellers on appropriate precautions to be taken to minimize any travel-related health risks in unfamiliar environments, before, during and after travel. Module 5 lays out the various aspects relevant to mental, neurological and substance use (MNS) conditions that travel health practitioners should be aware of when supporting travellers, or people with these conditions who are considering travelling. International travel can be a stressful experience. Travellers may face separation from family and familiar social support systems as well as having to adjust to foreign cultures and languages. Coping with high levels of stress may result in physical, social and psychological problems. Changes to the circadian rhythm and sleep deprivation can trigger seizures in people with epilepsy, provoke migraine attacks and exacerbate behavioural symptoms in people living with dementia. Under the stress of travel, pre-existing MNS conditions may be exacerbated or become apparent for the first time.

Mental, neurological, and substance use (MNS) disorders are prevalent in all regions of the world and are major contributors to morbidity and premature mortality. In 2008, the World Health Organization (WHO) developed the Mental Health Gap Action Programme (mhGAP), to facilitate scaling up of care for MNS disorders. A key part of mhGAP is the evidence-based guideline, published in 2010 and available through the mhGAP Evidence Resource Centre (http://www.who.int/mental health/mhgap/evidence/en/). The objectives of the guideline are: 1) To provide up-to-date WHO guidance to facilitate delivery of interventions by non-specialist health care providers in low- and middle-income countries (LAMICs); 2) To assist with the scale up of care for MNS disorders identified as conditions of high priority in LAMICs, specifically: depression, psychosis (including schizophrenia and bipolar disorders), epilepsy, child mental disorders, dementia, alcohol use disorders, drug use disorders and self-harm/suicide; 3) To provide up-to-date WHO guidance that will facilitate the implementation of the WHO Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan 2013-2020 by health care planners and programme managers in LAMICs.

This textbook presents an innovative educational and training protocol for treating mental health patients in primary care: the Multimodal Brief Systemic Training (MBSTP). Blending theory with practice, this manual offers a rigorous, versatile, and integrative approach, grounded in research, that can be easily adopted by primary care professionals—including general practitioners, nurses, social workers, and psychologists. It is not only invaluable for psychotherapy students but also serves as a vital resource for physicians and other non-mental health professionals seeking to support individuals facing cancer, chronic pain, palliative care, and other conditions that intertwine emotional, mental, and behavioural challenges within their close relational systems. The MBSTP is a compelling alternative to existing evidence-based training programs, which often centre on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Designed as a continuing education course led by a team of mental health specialists, this training provides a structured pathway for professional development. This book will help to reignite practitioners' interest in systemic thinking, encouraging them to revisit its significance in their work, or, for those new to the concept, to embrace it as a crucial aspect of their professional growth and contribute meaningfully to their evolution in the field.

Central to a coordinated approach to adolescent health across the organization is the HQ Interdepartmental Technical Working Group on Adolescent Health and Well-being. The Global status report on alcohol and health and treatment of substance use disorders presents a comprehensive overview of alcohol consumption, alcohol-related harm and policy responses as well as treatment capacities for alcohol and drug use disorders worldwide. The report is based on data collected by WHO from Member States and organized in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals health target 3.5 which calls on countries to strengthen “the prevention and treatment of substance abuse, including narcotic drug abuse and harmful use of alcohol”. The chapter on alcohol and health continues the series of WHO global status reports on alcohol and health and presents the latest available data on the status of, and trends in, alcohol consumption, as well as estimates of the alcohol-attributable disease burden and descriptions of policy responses worldwide. On the basis of data collected from countries on the treatment of substance use disorders the report describes the status of key components of treatment responses to alcohol and drug use disorders and proposes a new service capacity index for these disorders as an additional contextual indicator for monitoring progress in this domain of SDG health target 3.5. The report concludes with broad directions for international action to accelerate progress towards achievement of SDG health target 3.5.
