Estiu de l"any 1935. L"Antoni, de Barcelona, i en Bernat, de Palafrugell, inicien en plena joventut una amistat que es perllongarà en el temps. Fills de dos dirigents de la CNT que han compartit cel·la pels fets del Sis d"Octubre de 1934, coneixen l"amor de veritat per primer cop amb la Susana i la Laura, respectivament. En acabar l"estiu, la situació política —tensa i convulsa a la societat catalana, amb la Generalitat en mans del govern, i els ajuntaments governats per la dreta com a conseqüència de la declaració d"independència del president Companys— esclata a Palafrugell arran de la mort d"un operari de la indústria surera degut a la sinistra intervenció d"en Gustau Rieres, un empresari de males arts i pitjors intencions. En el mateix període és a punt d"aclarir-se la mort de la mare de la Laura; se sospita que també en Gustau hi va tenir a veure, per tal d"arrabassar les propietats al pare de la noia, en Domènec Juvell. Tanmateix, dos nous assassinats a Barcelona interrompran les investigacions i posaran en perill la vida de la Laura i la seva relació amb en Bernat. En aquests fets es mesclarà en Joan Sallent —cunyat d"en Domènec—, un home valent, lluitador i decidit que oferirà una col·laboració indispensable per tal de resoldre positivament la situació. D"altra banda, l"activitat sindical de la CNT a Barcelona —ciutat sotmesa a un sever control policial i militar— s"intensifica a mesura que passen els dies i mentre a l"Estat espanyol es preveuen unes eleccions generals anticipades, motivades per diversos escàndols que afecten directament la coalició vigent de dretes. Un cop convocades les eleccions, la proposta d"una gran coalició de front popular afavorirà l"indult de tots els presos polítics catalans: entre ells, evidentment, es troba el president Companys, però, en el trajecte ferroviari de retorn a la ciutat comtal, un veritable perill plana sobre la seva vida, a l"estació de Castelldefels.

When the United States and other powers declined to help fight fascist power at the onset of the Spanish Civil War, forty thousand private citizens from fifty-two countries rallied to join the International Brigade's defense of the Spanish Republic. Born out of the struggle between fascism and democracy and considered the first battle of World War II, the Spanish Civil War holds tremendous ideological significance and has inspired a remarkable range of American poetry. The Wound and the Dream represents the sixty-year tradition of American poetic responses to the Spanish Civil War and provides an overview of progressive American poetry as a whole. Four of the featured poets--Alvah Bessie, William Lindsay Gresham, James Neugass, and Edwin Rolfe--were members of the International Brigade. Their poetry appears alongside lesser-known works by some of the greatest American poets of the twentieth century, including Wallace Stevens, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Randall Jarrell, Langston Hughes, and Philip Levine. Cary Nelson's introduction discusses the collective nature of the poems, puts them in their international context, and provides a sturdy framework for interpreting the Spanish Civil War as a historical conjecture that has dramatically altered the ways we read and write poetry. The book also includes a brief biography of each poet and a glossary of related terms.
