Karya ini merupakan sebuah upaya untuk mengkaji sejarah dan budaya Aceh akademis. Meskipun telah banyak karya yang ditulis oleh para sarjana mengenai Aceh, termasuk dimensi sejarah, namun masih banyak pertanyaan historis mengenai masyarakat di paling ujung Pulau Sumatera ini yang masih tersisa dan belum terungkap. Singkatnya, karya ini dimaksud untuk mengisi gap dalam panggung sejarah Aceh. Secara khusus, dimensi "keislaman" mendapat perhatian lebih di dalam karya ini. Aceh identik dengan Islam. Dengan demikian, berbicara mengenai Aceh bermakna berbicara mengenai masyarakat Islam. Namun, dimensi "keagamaan" inilah yang sering diabaikan oleh para sarjana , terutama Barat, dalama kajiannya mengenai masyarakat Islam di Aceh. Hal yang sama juga terlihat pada kajan masyarakat Muslim lainnya di kawasan Nusantara, bahwa penekanan diberikan pada dimensi ekonomi dan politik semata. Dalam kajian terhadap topik-topik yang disajikan dalam karya ini, terlihat jelas bahwa dimensi keagamaan sesungguhnya tidak dapat dipisahkan-apalagi ditinggalkan-dari setiap perilaku masyarakat Aceh, baik masa kini maupun masa lalu. Dengan pendekatan ini diharapkan akan muncul penjelasan sejarah (sejarah explanation) dan interpretasi sejarah yang baru dan objektif terhadap topik bahasan.
