Puluhan tahun, perusahaan minyak mengeruk kekayaan alam Merbau. Kecamatan kecil di Kabupaten Bengkalis, Riau. Tiga perusahaan silih berganti tapi tak memberi kontribusi. Merbau dihantui pengangguran, kebodohan, kemiskinan, hingga bayi kurang gizi. Seorang bocah bernama Sumantri, bahkan harus tinggal di panti asuhan demi mengenyam pendidikan yang layak. Penduduk hanya menjadi penonton, saat mesin-mesin tambang menyedot minyak dari tanah Merbau. Mereka pun sebatas pendengar kisah minyak Merbau yang menghasilkan jutaan dolar. Negeri yang kaya tapi masyarakat tak berdaya. Setelah hampir satu dekade, Sumantri, sang putra Merbau kembali ke kampong halaman. Namun situasi dan kondisi ternyata masih sama. Kemiskinan mendorong warga melakukan segala cara. Termasuk membalak kayu hutan dan menjualnya pada para tauke Malaysia. Saat pembalakan dilarang polisi, masyarakat kehilangan rezeki. Laut yang menjadi alternatif sumber penghasilan pun tercemar minyak. Rentetan masalah sosial dan lingkungan muncul akibat kemiskinan dan kebodohan. Perusahaan minyak dituding sebagai penyebab. Konflik laten horisontal dan vertikal merebak dan siap meledak karena rencana pemekaran wilayah. Sumantri tak ingin anak-anak Merbau seperti dirinya. Merbau punya banyak potensi. Masyarakat Merbau tak seharusnya hanya meratapi diri. Sumantri tak ingin hanya bermimpi. Meskipun hanya seorang guru, dia memotivasi warga Merbau untuk bersatu dan bangkit mandiri. Kisah masyarakat Merbau ini diangkat dari peristiwa yang benar-benar terjadi. Gambaran miris dari daerah yang terisolasi. Terabaikan dan terlupakan seperti anak tiri. Pahit getir kehidupan masyarakat di pulau terpencil yang menghanyutkan rasa empati.
