George Ricker's latest book, mere atheism, no gods no problem!, describes what he sees as the essence of atheism. In the title essay he writes, "Nothing about atheism prevents me from thinking about any idea. It is the very epitome of freethought. Atheism imposes no dogma and seeks no power over others." Written with the same candor and conversational style that characterized his earlier work, this selection of material from the Godless in America web site ranges from rebuttals of criticisms of atheism, "Answering atheism's critics," to essays on science, "Genes don't care," and some hot-button issues, "A death in the life of a controversy," to reflections on the joy of sailing and the impact of the world outside on the world within in "Mockingbird." The twenty-four essays cover a wide variety of subjects, and the collection concludes with the one-act play, "A last rite and some wrongs with apologetics." "Many people still cling to the notion of the village atheist, obsessed by gods and religions, bitter and lonely, living on the edge of town with no friends and no family willing to acknowledge the kinship," Ricker says. "I hope this book will help change that perception."

Throughout history there have been great and articulate defenders of the faith, from Augustine and Aquinas to Jonathan Edwards, G. K. Chesterton, Francis Schaeffer, and C. S. Lewis. But with new challenges comes the need for a fresh apologetic that specifically addresses the arguments levied against faith in our time of scientific atheism and skepticism. In the spirit of C. S. Lewis's Mere Christianity, Alister McGrath's Mere Apologetics seeks to equip readers to engage gracefully and intelligently with the challenges facing the faith today while drawing appropriately on the wisdom of the past. Rather than supplying the fine detail of every apologetic issue in order to win arguments, Mere Apologetics teaches a method that appeals not only to the mind but also to the heart and the imagination. This highly accessible, easy-to-read book is perfect for pastors, teachers, students, and lay people who want to speak clearly and lovingly to the issues that confront people of faith today.

What drives us to be good? How do we even know how to be good? Philosophers and theologians have dealt with such questions for millennia, but Dan Barker thinks the answers are not so complicated. In Mere Morality, he argues there's no need to appeal to supernatural commandments or the fear of some higher power when considering morality. Stripping "good" and "evil" down to the basics, he offers a simple compass for navigating life's most difficult moral and ethical dilemmas.

Theism And Atheism In A Post Secular Age written by Morteza Hashemi and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-07-05 with Philosophy categories.

This book examines the post-secular idea of ‘religion for non-believers’. The new form of unbelief which is dubbed as ‘tourist atheism’ is not based on absolute rejection of religion as a ‘dangerous illusion’ or ‘mere prejudice’. Tourist atheists instead consider religion as a cultural heritage and a way of seeking perfection. What are the origins of these new forms of atheism? What are the implications of the emergence of a type of atheism which is more open toward religious teachings, rituals, arts, and world views? Hashemi argues that public intellectuals must consider that it is a sign of a post-secular age in which believers and non-believers go beyond mere tolerance and engage in a creative process of co-practice and co-working.

The Urban Myths Of Popular Modern Atheism written by Paul E. Hill and has been published by John Hunt Publishing this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-02-22 with Religion categories.

How Atheists rely on urban myths about religion to buttress their case against God. God, and the whole business of being dependent upon him, is being downgraded, downsized, downplayed, and most of all, just plain dismissed in the modern, cultured, educated parts of Europe and in academia. This process is powered and driven by a whole, growing series of interlocked urban myths about what is supposed to be involved in being a religious (and often specifically Christian) believer. This book examines and critiques those myths, showing how the Christian faith can be intelligent and supported by reason.

This is a narrative about what is often referred to as, the natural evolution of atheism. This is not a mere shadow of doubt in God's existence or "walking with atheists" in order to convince the reader about the legitimacy of atheism. This would inappropriate and vulgar. My own life's experience is dotted with penalties, dangers and risks of exposing me as an atheist in primitive indigenous communities in the Andean Sierras of South America, when visiting the Shamans in the Amazon Rain Forest, and when I was living incognito within a fundamentalist Christian community in Peru. Those events are briefly described in my book, Prisoners of our Ideals. In a historical context, it is important to articulate the natural and historical evolution of atheism because, in current times, the intense commitments to different forms of monotheist religions have acquired such a strong and dangerous political connotation, especially between the fundamentalist Christianity and orthodox Islam. The widespread suspicion cast on atheists or disbelievers is becoming a real thread to free thought. For the politically motivated religious propagators, atheism is not a small and irrelevant group of free thinkers, but a growing social, intellectual and scientific force. They believe that atheism, science and free-thought would be corrosive to their religious dogma and they are worrying about it. I must admit that they are correct! Atheism is corrosive to religious dogma, whose God states that, "If you do not believe inme, you'll burn in Hell forever." Contemporary atheists have preserved the long tradition of scepticism, for men and women have been sceptical in God's existence. For instance, Epicurus (341-270 BCE) said "Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able but not willing? Then he is malevolent...Is he neither able nor willing, then why call him God?" You see, books on the historical evolution of atheism are regarded as "subversive disbelieve" and such arguments paradoxically could only be found among believers. This is because Christianity; since the time of the Emperor Flavius Titus (39-81 AD), has continuously been redesigning itself and theologians often formulated the most dangerous sceptical arguments in an effort to test the strength of their faith....All of this dramatises the believers' attitude towards this life and the delusional hope in the existence of life-after-death. Their fear of death is but illusionary and meaningless. In the words of the atheist who influenced Thomas Jefferson, the Greek philosopher Epicurus: " Death does not concern us, because as long as we exist, death is not here. And when it does come, we no longer exist...Why should I fear death, if I am [existing], then death is not, if death is, I am not. Why should I fear that [which] does not exist, when I do [exist]." He clearly did not believe in life-after death....The irony is that people in the US have forgotten, or are no longer taught, that their country was founded by secularists and atheists who were escaping from political oppression and religious persecution. Leaders of the American Revolution, Thomas Paine and Thomas Jefferson, were both secularist (deist) but not religious. In fact, the second President of the US, John Adams was an atheist; so were Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, James Buchanan and James Madison, among others. US President John Adams (1797-1801), stated that, "God is in essence nothing that we know off, and until this offal blasphemy is got rid off there never will be any liberal science in the world." ....This book is a scientific and historical narrative from the Big Bang formation of our universe, the Laws of Nature, Prehistoric societies, the Imperial Roman invention of Christianity, Islam's questionable beginning and origins to problems with religious morality. Enjoy the book, family recommended.

This book, written in the latter part of the nineteenth century is more a defense of the right to be an atheist, than of atheism as a doctrine. The author objects to the notion that atheists are somehow 'outside the law' and are little better than common criminals.
