Throughout history there have been great and articulate defenders of the faith, from Augustine and Aquinas to Jonathan Edwards, G. K. Chesterton, Francis Schaeffer, and C. S. Lewis. But with new challenges comes the need for a fresh apologetic that specifically addresses the arguments levied against faith in our time of scientific atheism and skepticism. In the spirit of C. S. Lewis's Mere Christianity, Alister McGrath's Mere Apologetics seeks to equip readers to engage gracefully and intelligently with the challenges facing the faith today while drawing appropriately on the wisdom of the past. Rather than supplying the fine detail of every apologetic issue in order to win arguments, Mere Apologetics teaches a method that appeals not only to the mind but also to the heart and the imagination. This highly accessible, easy-to-read book is perfect for pastors, teachers, students, and lay people who want to speak clearly and lovingly to the issues that confront people of faith today.

Mere Christianity is a theological book and is considered a classic of Christian apologetics, the transcripts of the broadcasts originally appeared in print as three separate pamphlets: The Case for Christianity (1942), Christian Behaviour (1943), and Beyond Personality (1944). Lewis, an Anglican, intended to describe the Christian common ground. In Mere Christianity, he aims at avoiding controversies to explain fundamental teachings of Christianity, for the sake of those basically educated as well as the intellectuals of his generation, for whom the jargon of formal Christian theology did not retain its original meaning. Clive Staples Lewis (1898-1963) was a British novelist, poet, academic, medievalist, literary critic, essayist, lay theologian, lecturer, and Christian apologist. He is best known for his fictional work, especially The Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Space Trilogy, and for his non-fiction Christian apologetics, such as Mere Christianity, Miracles, and The Problem of Pain.

"Mere Christianity" by C.S. Lewis is a seminal work that explores the foundations of Christian faith and morality with intellectual rigor and clarity. Originally delivered as a series of radio talks during World War II, the book seeks to present a common ground of beliefs that unite Christians across various denominations. Divided into four parts, Lewis begins by making a case for the existence of a moral law, a universal standard that points towards a higher power. He then delves into the nature of God, the concept of Christian behavior, and the transformative power of faith. Lewis employs logical reasoning, insightful anecdotes, and a conversational style that makes complex theological ideas accessible to a broad audience. "Mere Christianity" has had a profound impact on Christian apologetics and philosophy, becoming a classic in the genre. Lewis's exploration of morality, virtue, and the essence of Christianity transcends its wartime origins, remaining relevant and influential in the ongoing discourse about the Christian faith. This enduring work continues to engage readers with its timeless insights into the nature of belief and the foundations of Christian thought.

Why another book? Because it is my opinion that while we can get a three-hundred-page book on one Christian theological concept, we cannot get a simple book in approximately 150 pages that adequately covers the “what/why/how” Christianity is true. Similarly biblical literacy and understanding continues to fall. The following quote summarize our current plight: “Many high school seniors believe that Sodom and Gomorrah were husband and wife, while a majority of Americans cannot name one of the four Gospels. Jay Leno asked his Tonight Show audience one night to name one of Jesus’ twelve apostles; they came up empty. One in ten Americans believes that Joan of Arc was Noah’s wife, and only one-third knows that Jesus (not Billy Graham) preached the Sermon on the Mount.” - Washington Monthly I believe this adequately sums up our current situation in the West and why we must revisit with believer and non-believer alike what it truly means to be a Christ follower today. In this book James Stroud (MA History; BA Philosophy) not only breaks down why God must exist in easy to follow terminology, but why the Christian concept of God provides the most coherent answer to who this God is. This is a very good introductory book for those wanting an overview of the Bible and apologetics in layman’s terms and how to better understand why Christianity is more plausible today than ever.

"Follow the evidence, wherever it leads."- SocratesWhy another book? Because it is my opinion that while we can get a 300 page book on 1 Christian theological concept, we cannot get a simple book in approximately 100 pages that adequately covers the Christian story in its entirety that we can simply carry with us to reference for "on the spot" dialogue; the following quote summarize our current plight: "Many high school seniors believe that Sodom and Gomorrah were husband and wife, while a majority of Americans cannot name one of the four Gospels. Jay Leno asked his Tonight Show audience one night to name one of Jesus' twelve apostles; they came up empty. So what would a handy book that one could carry with them that covered all the basics that virtually everyone agrees to on the subjects of: Intelligent Design, Creationism, Philosophy of religion, apologetics, and what the Bible and Jesus says at a basic level, (in approximately 100 pages), look like? Hopefully like this one because that is the exact purpose for why I have compiled it.James Stroud has done undergraduate studies in both History and Religious Studies as well as post graduate studies in Theology at APUS, Trinity Seminary, Biola and the University of Arkansas; he currently resides in the New York City Area. Mere Christianity is one of the best books of Christian apologetics ever written. Arguably, no book other than the Bible itself has had as much influence for the cause of the gospel over the past 60 years. The story of how that message came to be created, during the rigors of World War II in England, is fascinating in and of itself. But it also addresses a very important question: How do we present the gospel effectively to a culture that has Christian foundations but has become largely secularized and ignorant of biblical truth? C. S. Lewis & Mere Christianity develops the circumstances of Lewis’s life and the inner workings of the BBC. It also goes into greater detail about life in the middle of war against Nazi Germany, and Lewis’s series of broadcasts that extended into 1944.

"Mere Christianity" is the most popular of C. S. This book brings together Lewis's legendary radio broadcast talks in which he set out simply "to explain and defend the belief that has been common to nearly all Christians at all times". Rejecting the boundaries that divide Christianity's many denominations, "Mere Christianity" is Lewis's term for the essential Christian message--the theological core on which diverse Christian traditions can stand together.
