Rentang perjalanan yang panjang dari setiap Guru Besar itu tidaklah berlangsung secara linear, mulus, dan sederhana. Tidak pula seluruhnya berawal dari rintisan karier yang sejalan dengan minat dan pilihan nuraninya. Namun, sekalipun para Guru Besar itu merintis karier dalam disiplin ilmu dengan landasan teoretis, konseptual, dan metodologis yang ditumbuhkembangkan oleh ilmuwan-ilmuwan manca negara, mereka ternyata mampu memadukan pengetahuan itu dengan fenomena empiris social-budaya yang terwujud di bumi Indonesia. Meretas batas disiplin ilmu pun dilakukan agar dapat menyumbangkan karya ilmiahnya secara lebih optimal bagi pengembangan ilmu dan kemaslahatan bangsa dan negara Indonesia. This book examines the role of local knowledge in promoting agricultural innovation and legislative support for agricultural innovation through intellectual property laws and the protection of farmers’ rights. In assessing the role of intellectual property in promoting agricultural innovation the book examines plant variety rights protection, the patenting of plant varieties and plant breeding methods; gene patents and climate change; open source biotechnology and agricultural innovation and geographical indications and the marketing of agricultural products. As a test bed for the application of the themes of the book, it applies a case study approach to look at the role of local knowledge and intellectual property rights in the cultivation of traditional rice varieties in Kerala, South West India and the extent to which this cultivation is supported by Indian legislation. The book concludes with an examination of the success of self-help groups, such as Farmers’ Clubs. This book appeals to all readers interested in policies to promote sustainable agriculture at a time of increasing food insecurity. A special feature of the book is the case study approach. To date, the role of local knowledge and agricultural innovation has been almost entirely ignored and the role of intellectual property in this space has been largely ignored. The book is a result of a research collaboration between the University of Western Australia and Kerala Agricultural University, funded in part by the Australian Research Council.

Organisasi sebatas handphone, adalah penamaan saya tentang paguyuban ini. Tanpa anggaran dasar, tanpa kepengurusan dan tanpa stempel serta kop surat. Dengan menggunakan aplikasi media sosial yang terdapat di handphone semua Dosen UI Katolik, maka komunikasi berlangsung sejak sepuluh tahun lalu. Organisasi mulai dari misa antar kampus tiga bulan sekali, yang lama-lama menjadi dua bulan dan akhirnya sebulan sekali. Selanjutnya diadakan pula rekoleksi setahun sekali. Keanggotaan organisasi, belakangan menyebut diri “paguyuban”, lalu semakin membesar. Salah satu indikatornya, semakin intensnya komunikasi antar dosen ketika ada mahasiswa yang membutuhkan dana, ada sesama dosen Katolik yang sakit atau kebutuhan mendesak lainnya. Dengan situasi itu, untuk apa menyusun dan menerbitkan buku? Semua berawal dari rangkaian kuliah daring yang sengaja diadakan oleh paguyuban untuk mengisi waktu ketika mengalami isolasi di rumah pada masa Pembatasan Sosial Berskala Besar (PSBB) yang dimulai sejak April 2020 ini. Biasanya, usai kuliah yang diberikan oleh para romo secara bergantian, diskusi terus berlanjut di grup WA. Memang, melalui acara tersebut, demikian juga melalui sarana grup WA, kita semua mendapat kesempatan untuk saling memberi kesempatan bertatap muka dan berkomunikasi lebih intensif secara virtual. Saat itulah ide membuat buku mulai muncul. Ide itu adalah pengejawantahan dari semangat kolaborasi dan berbagi yang telah lama muncul diantara sejawat. Beberapa sejawat kemudian mengajukan diri menjadi pengumpul tulisan. Ada pula yang bersedia menjadi penyunting. Banyak nama yang kemudian bersedia menulis, merefleksikan pengalaman hidupnya dalam kalimat-kalimat di beberapa lembar kertas. Kita sepakat untuk berbagi dalam bentuk tertulis, berupa buku dosen bercerita. Jumlah penulis memang tidak terlalu banyak, sekitar tiga puluhan orang. Masih jauh di bawah jumlah total dosen yang mencapai lebih dari seratus orang. Saya berharap, pada kesempatan lain, semakin banyak sejawat yang bersedia menulis. Terlepas dari itu, melalui kesempatan ini, saya mengucapkan terima kasih atas kesediaan sejawat semua yang bersedia menulis untuk buku ini. Kehidupan dosen, baik di UI maupun kampus-kampus lain, memang unik. Walaupun penuh kemandirian dan kemerdekaan, diimbuhi dengan kompetensi akademik yang tinggi, tetapi pada kenyataannya para dosen juga dikelilingi dengan sejumlah aturan, harapan dan nilai-nilai. Ketika sang dosen menyandang sebutan diri sebagai Dosen Katolik, maka semakin banyak nilai yang harus diikuti. Padahal tantangan dunia tidak berubah, malah semakin berat. Saat itulah kekatolikan diuji, apakah akan menjadi sekadar orang biasa atau orang yang tidak biasa. Sekali lagi, tulisan-tulisan dalam buku ini mencerminkan pergulatan yang nyata dari para dosen. Ada kalanya mereka kalah, ada kalanya menang. Namun satu hal yang pasti, mereka jujur. Besar harapan, buku ini menjadi pertinggal abadi bagi paguyuban kecil para Dosen UI Katolik. Semoga buku ini menjadi saksi betapa kelompok kecil di UI ini bisa bertahan jika mau saling berbagi dan saling mendukung. Melalui paguyuban ini, pelayanan kepada mahasiswa akan semakin baik, demikian pula kualitas pendidikan di UI akan terus terjaga. Selamat membaca!

This collection of Japanese fairy tales is the outcome of a suggestion made to me indirectly through a friend by Mr. Andrew Lang. They have been translated from the modern version written by Sadanami Sanjin. These stories are not literal translations, and though the Japanese story and all quaint Japanese expressions have been faithfully preserved, they have been told more with the view to interest young readers of the West than the technical student of folk-lore. Grateful acknowledgment is due to Mr. Y. Yasuoka, Miss Fusa Okamoto, my brother Nobumori Ozaki, Dr. Yoshihiro Takaki, and Miss Kameko Yamao, who have helped me with translations. The story which I have named “The Story of the Man who did not Wish to Die” is taken from a little book written a hundred years ago by one Shinsui Tamenaga. It is named Chosei Furo, or “Longevity.” “The Bamboo-cutter and the Moon-child” is taken from the classic “Taketari Monogatari,” and is NOT classed by the Japanese among their fairy tales, though it really belongs to this class of literature. The pictures were drawn by Mr. Kakuzo Fujiyama, a Tokio artist. In telling these stories in English I have followed my fancy in adding such touches of local color or description as they seemed to need or as pleased me, and in one or two instances I have gathered in an incident from another version. At all times, among my friends, both young and old, English or American, I have always found eager listeners to the beautiful legends and fairy tales of Japan, and in telling them I have also found that they were still unknown to the vast majority, and this has encouraged me to write them for the children of the West...FROM THE BOOKS.

Is the history of the modern world the history of Europe writ large? Or is it possible to situate the history of modernity as a world historical process apart from its origins in Western Europe? In this posthumous collection of essays, Marshall G. S. Hodgson challenges adherents of both Eurocentrism and multiculturalism to rethink the place of Europe in world history. He argues that the line that connects Ancient Greeks to the Renaissance to modern times is an optical illusion, and that a global and Asia-centred history can better locate the European experience in the shared histories of humanity. Hodgson then shifts the historical focus and in a parallel move seeks to locate the history of Islamic civilisation in a world historical framework. In so doing he concludes that there is but one history - global history - and that all partial or privileged accounts must necessarily be resituated in a world historical context. The book also includes an introduction by the editor, Edmund Burke, contextualising Hodgson's work in world history and Islamic history.
