The illustrious life of Merlyn Baillieu Myer (1900-1982) spanned more than three-quarters of the twentieth century. Born in Queenscliff, on Victoria's Bellarine Peninsula, the third of four children of a prosperous family of hoteliers, Merlyn was propelled from being a shy and timid child into becoming one of Australia's grandest, most celebrated philanthropic and social figures. Her life was transformed when, in San Francisco on her twentieth birthday in 1920, Merlyn married department-store magnate Sidney Myer. She became a society hostess; a travel companion; and the mother to their four children, all born by the end of the decade. Together, Merlyn and Sidney bought a home in Toorak, which they named Cranlana. Together, they consolidated the identity of the Store (as the family called the Myer Emporium) into a formidable business. Together, they lived and loved life to the full. Then, without warning, in September 1934, Sidney died. The widowed Merlyn, left with a young family, practically reinvented herself. In the process, over the next half-century until her death in 1982, she carried the Myer flame and the Myer name. Inheriting Sidney's mantle, Merlyn became both a matriarch and 'Mother of the Store', renowned equally for her pragmatic business sense and empathy in dealing with human problems. But Dame Merlyn (as she became) was not only a woman of the world (a world she navigated many times, from the age of trans-Pacific steamers to the age of Concorde) but also her own woman - carrying an innate sense of elegance and style coupled with an extraordinary spirit of generosity that never wavered. Almost forty years after her death, Merlyn's philanthropic influence still resounds deeply within her family. Michael Shmith's detailed and telling biography finally brings long-deserved attention to a relatively distant and elusive figure, her story now unfolding with grace and clarity. Through the memories of those who knew her and shared her history, her own copious correspondence and meticulous archival research by historian Dr Stella M Barber, the real Merlyn emerges from the shadows - in all her grandeur and glory.

When Kenneth Baillieu Myer's father fell dead on the footpath in 1934, Ken's life changed in an instant. As the eldest son of the Jewish immigrant retailing genius, Sidney Baevski Myer, who went from pedlar to philanthropist millionaire in fifteen years, 13-year-old Ken was immediately acknowledged as head of the family. Despite a conventional education at Geelong Grammar and a year at Princeton University, Ken was an unconventional man. He had hit headlines when he was born and continued to make news throughout his life-as the powerful Executive Chairman of Myer; in his refusal to be Governor-General of Australia; with his separation and divorce from his wife Prue and remarriage to a Japanese woman half his age, Yasuko Hiraoka; as Chairman of the Victorian Arts Centre and the National Library of Australia; and during his disastrous years as Chairman of the ABC-a reward for signing the 'Myer It's time' letter, acknowledged by Whitlam as influential in bringing the Labor Party to power in 1972. Ken Myer introduced Australia to the first regional shopping centres, with Chadstone changing the face of the Australian landscape. Parking meters, state of the art information systems at the National Library of Australia, ground-breaking medical research at The Howard Florey Institute and genetic engineering at CSIRO were all facilitated by him. Visionary and romantic, he was depressive and driven, charming one moment, icy the next. Unpretentious and a passionate conservationist, he was generous both publicly and anonymously, giving away his fortune and in doing so founding modern philanthropy in Australia. Happiest when finally free of the Store, he died with his wife Yasuko in a light plane crash in Alaska in 1992. With unprecedented access to family documents, Sue Ebury paints a vivid portrait of the many aspects of Ken Myer's life, and the man himself.

In 1899, a 21-year-old Russian, Simcha Baevski, arrived at the Port of Melbourne in pursuit of a new identity and a new life. Renaming himself Sidney Myer, he founded a small drapery business in Bendigo, Victoria. From these beginnings Sidney accumulated significant wealth, which enabled him to buy an established retail business in Bourke Street, Melbourne, in 1911. This became The Myer Emporium, a Melbourne shopping institution whose enduring status no one could foresee. The year 1920 was to be a momentous one for Sidney: in January he married Margery Merlyn Baillieu and by November he had registered interest in a Toorak residence, Torrie, eventually to be renamed Cranlana, at 62 Clendon Road. When Sidney died suddenly in 1934, Merlyn was left not only a widow but also chatelaine of Cranlana and 'Mother of the Store'. Over the ensuing years, Cranlana evolved in various ways, always with Merlyn at the helm. When Dame Merlyn Myer died in 1982, her children rallied to keep the dream alive. Adopting Cranlana's air of concealed mystery, this book guides the reader though its magnificent wrought-iron gates and into a garden and a house that breathes history - one resonating with horticultural vitality, material beauty and human enterprise - yet a place still very much a living family concern and to date not open to the public. Breathtakingly designed and illustrated, and full of reminiscences from the people who lived and worked at 62 Clendon Road, this book is a fitting celebration of the life of Cranlana during its first 100 years.

This book showcases the contribution Australian contemporary glass artist David Wright has made to Australian art and international glassmaking. From 1970 until 2014, David Wright produced hundreds of high quality art glass windows for Australian public, private and sacred spaces, including significant national churches, chapels, and synagogues, yet little scholarly research on the artist and his place in Australian art history exists. Including the first catalogue raisonné ever produced on the artist, combined with a close examination of his opus, his influences, manufacturing methods and personal history, this book demonstrates for the first time the extraordinary contribution David Wright made to Australian art and contemporary glassmaking.

Power Glamour And Angst written by Ilan Wiesel and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2018-08-25 with Science categories.

Power, Glamour and Angst is about the social and cultural life of three Australian neighbourhoods – Toorak (Melbourne), Mosman (Sydney) and Cottesloe (Perth) - which are home to some of the nation’s wealthiest and most powerful citizens. The book explores how living in these neighbourhoods shapes the lifestyles, social networks and status of Australia’s elites. The book explores the everyday rituals through which residents produce their neighbourhood's status. It maps residents’ social networks and exposes the local institutions – including schools and sports or social clubs – in which access to such high-powered networks is granted or withheld. Power, Glamour and Angst examines how the collective social and cultural capitals of elite neighbourhoods are mobilised towards varied objectives, from initiation of business connections and opportunities, through to opposition against unwanted development or traffic, both sources of ongoing angst. Deeply conservative and resistant to change at their core, despite their wealth and power these communities have not always been successful in fully repressing external pressures. In the 21st century Australian city, even elite neighbourhoods must learn to adapt to population growth, urban densification and increased cultural diversity.

Marigold, Lady Southey, the subject of this sumptuous publication, is the youngest child of retail magnate and philanthropist, Sidney Myer and Dame Merlyn (Baillieu) Myer. Marigold clearly inherited her father's drive and entrepreneurial spirit, and like her parents has devoted much of her life to philanthropic causes. Most of the work Marigold has done in support of others is not widely known, not even to her own family. Marigold: Milestones and Memories: Lady Southey AC explores key milestones in Marigold's life and will be a revelation to any reader. Marigold is a woman who has worked tirelessly for environmental, health, welfare, arts and animal causes. She drove a Red Cross ambulance transporting polio patients for more than 40 years, played a major role in saving the Snowy River, spent years supporting the Stroke and Heart Foundations, took the Australian Ballet to Russia, China and Japan and while in her seventh decade took on a new role as Victoria's Lieutenant Governor. Additionally, she played a pivotal role in the development of Victoria's hospitality sector, working with her late husband, Ross Shelmerdine to open one of the first espresso bars in Melbourne, bringing the concept of BYO to restaurants, establishing Australia's first motor inn and creating the Mitchelton winery as an eco-tourist destination, years ahead of its time. She also ran a cattle stud where she and Ross pioneered advanced breeding programs and planted tens of thousands of trees. Marigold remains a patron of a range of organisations for which she works tirelessly including among many others, Guide Dogs Victoria, the Monash Children's Hospital and e.motion 21. Her story will help fill the gap in the records of incredible Australian women making a difference in so many spheres of Australian life.
