Guy Theunis, citoyen belge âgé de 60 ans, a été arrêté le 6 septembre 2005 à Kigali alors qu'il était en transit et s'apprêtait à prendre un avion pour la Belgique. Le 11 septembre, à l'issue d'une audience publique, un tribunal populaire l'a accusé de participation au génocide de 1994. Il a aussitôt été envoyé à la prison centrale de Kigali. C'est ainsi qu'était résumé, dans un appel de soutien signé par des parlementaires européens en date du 30 septembre 2005, ce qui allait devenir l'Affaire Theunis. Le père Guy Theunis a vécu 24 ans au Rwanda, de 1970 à 1994. Il y a occupé différentes fonctions (vicaire de paroisse, professeur au grand séminaire de Nyakibanda, secrétaire de la revue Dialogue...). Au début des années 1990, il s'engage dans l'Association rwandaise de défense des droits de la personne et des libertés publiques (ADL). Il va jouer un rôle de premier plan dans la publication du premier rapport de l'ADL (décembre 1992), qui fut à l'origine de la commission d'enquête internationale venue au Rwanda en 1993 sous la direction d'Alison Des Forges et d'Eric Gillet. Quelles sont les raisons qui ont amené les autorités de Kigali à l'arrêter en septembre 2005, alors qu'il avait séjourné plusieurs fois dans le pays depuis 1995 ? C'est ce que tente d'élucider Guy Theunis au fil d'un récit basé sur son journal de prison et enrichi de nombreux témoignages. Un récit qui nous plonge au coeur de la prison centrale de Kigali et nous éclaire sur le fonctionnement des juridictions gacaca. Le dossier d'accusation s'avérera vide, de l'aveu des avocats rwandais ; ce que confirmera la justice belge en classant le dossier sans suite. Ses engagements pour la non-violence active et la défense des droits de l'homme lui ont valu de recevoir, le 15 février 2006, le prix pour la Paix de l'hebdomadaire belge Kerk en Leven.

Catholic and Protestant missionaries followed their own, competing agendas rather than those of the colonial state. This volume unravels these agendas and challenges received wisdom on the histories of Rwanda and Burundi, as well as the colonial relationship between state and mission. The archives of the White Fathers Catholic missionary order in Rome and Paris are read alongside primary sources produced by the British Protestant Church Missionary Society to analyse their impact between 1900 and 1972 in Rwanda and Burundi. The colonial state was weaker than often assumed, and permeable by external radical influences. Denominational competition between Catholic and Protestant missionaries was a key motor of this radicalism. The colonial state in both kingdoms was a weak, reactive agent rather than a structuring form of power. This volume shows that missionaries were more committed and influential actors, but their inability to manage the mass demand for the education that they sought and delivered finally undermined the achievement of their aims.
