PREFACE Le plaisir de parler de soi, si agreable a la plupart des gens, n'entre absolument pour rien, je puis le dire, dans le dessein que j'ai forme d'ecrire mes Memoires. Avec Pascal, j'ai toujours trouve le moi haissable, et j'ai pousse a cet egard la pudeur de l'ame jusqu'a ce point que plusieurs entre mes amis les plus chers ignorent encore, a cette heure, un grand nombre des evenements et des sentiments qui ont anime ou trouble ma vie intime. Soit fierte, soit besoin imperieux de tenir debout mon courage, je n'ai non plus jamais cherche dans mes chagrins cette compassion attendrie qui nous invite, en quelque sorte, a nous plaindre des injustices du sort, la tendance de mon esprit etant de me considerer dans l'ensemble et non a part des communes tristesses. Une telle maniere de voir, lorsqu'elle nous devient familiere, diminue beaucoup l'infatuation qui voudrait entretenir de soi ses proches ou le public.
