La carriera dell’ingegnere sammarinese Gino Zani (1882-1964) attraversa una fase cruciale del passaggio a una nuova forma di città. L’urgenza storica con cui si presenta la metropoli è, già di per sé, l’espressione stessa del moderno che scardina le tradizionali categorie interpretative. L’irruzione del moderno è però pervasiva, investe anche chi, come Zani, cercherà di opporre all’urto una resistenza conservativa. La città in Zani è inizialmente un risultato che emerge dagli sviluppi tecnologici come risposta pratica alle necessità, e si trasforma poi in un ambizioso obiettivo da raggiungere che, insieme allo spazio, deve coinvolgere la storia mitizzata della sua forma urbana. A una prima città moderna, la Reggio Calabria dei primi del Novecento, espressione di una borghesia urbana che tenta un riscatto dopo lo choc della distruzione del terremoto, succede così una seconda città, la San Marino degli anni Trenta, che, attraverso l’invenzione di una tradizione, si apriva ugualmente alla modernità travestita da borgo storico ricostruito. Il libro vede riuniti i lavori di autorevoli autori che hanno contribuito ad elevare la figura di Zani e una selezione dei suoi progetti.

Earth’s fractured geology is visible in its fault lines. It is along these lines that earthquakes occur, sometimes with disastrous effects. These disturbances can significantly influence urban development, as seen in the aftermath of two earthquakes in Messina, Italy, in 1908 and in the Belice Valley, Sicily, in 1968. Following the history of these places before and after their destruction, this book explores plans and developments that preceded the disasters and the urbanism that emerged from the ruins. This volume proposes a rich corpus of papers about the 'Other City', a subject only few times dealt with, but worthy of all our attention: it imposes itself on the scene of international modern and contemporary historiography for its undeniable topicality. Throughout history, the city has always had to deal with social 'otherness', i.e. with class privileges and, consequently, with discrimination and marginalization of minorities, of the less well-off, of foreigners, in short, with the differences in status, culture, religion. So that the urban fabric has ended up structuring itself also in function of those inequalities, as well as of the strategic places for the exercise of power, of the political, military or social control, of the spaces for imprisonment, for the sanitary isolation or for the 'temporary' remedy to the catastrophes. From the first portraits of cities, made and diffused at the beginning of the fifteenth century for political exaltation purposes or for religious propaganda and for devotional purposes, which often, through increasingly refined graphic techniques, distort or even deny the true urban image, we reach, at the dawn of contemporary history, the new meaning given by scientific topography and new methods of representation; these latter aimed at revealing the structure and the urban landscape in their objectivity, often unexpected for who had known the city through the filter of 'regime' iconography. The representation of the urban image still shows the contradictions of a community that sometimes includes and even exalts the diversities, other times rejects them, showing the unease of a difficult integration.

Vi sono più modi di intendere la modernità ed è già stato scritto come il "ripensare la modernità" abbia portato a sviluppare il concetto che nella cultura dominante nell'Occidente del XX secolo non ne esiste una unica. Già il Congresso del 2007 aveva fatto il punto sullo stato degli studi e sul vasto panorama del patrimonio architettonico esistente. Nuove ricerche sul tema prendono ora corpo in due volumi curati da Maria Luisa Neri, il primo, e da Laura Marcucci, il secondo. Due parti solo apparentemente autonome, ma in realtà interattive, caratterizzano questo primo volume. La prima parte concentra l'attenzione sul ruolo svolto dalle riviste d'architettura nel dibattito e nella divulgazione del sapere architettonico internazionale. La seconda è l'esemplificazione di consuetudini e comportamenti professionali emblematici di esperienze tutte vissute all'interno di un mondo di idee legate alla ricerca di una modernità altra e di modi di procedere nella prassi operativa tipici di gran parte della società italiana. MARIA LUISA NERI, professore ordinario di Storia dell'Architettura Contemporanea presso la Scuola di Architettura e Design Eduardo Vittoria dell'Università degli Studi di Camerino, ha promosso ricerche sul territorio di età medievale, e sulla città, sull'architettura e sugli architetti dell'Ottocento e del Novecento. Ha curato il volume Le fondazioni benedettine nelle Marche: materiali per un atlante storico geografico dei sistemi insediativi territoriali,Napoli 2007 (Premio Salimbeni per la Storia e la Critica d'Arte,menzione d'onore). È autrice delle monografie su Mario De Renzi. L'architettura come mestiere, 1897-1967, Roma 1992 e Enrico Del Debbio,Milano 2006. Tra i numerosi studi sull'Ottocento si ricorda il recente Architettura e città nell'Ottocento. Percorsi e protagonisti di una storia europea, Roma 2011 (con Simonetta Ciranna e Gerardo Doti).
