In genetics laboratories in Latin America, scientists have been mapping the genomes of local populations, seeking to locate the genetic basis of complex diseases and to trace population histories. As part of their work, geneticists often calculate the European, African, and Amerindian genetic ancestry of populations. Some researchers explicitly connect their findings to questions of national identity and racial and ethnic difference, bringing their research to bear on issues of politics and identity. Drawing on ethnographic research in Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico, the contributors to Mestizo Genomics explore how the concepts of race, ethnicity, nation, and gender enter into and are affected by genomic research. In Latin America, national identities are often based on ideas about mestizaje (race mixture), rather than racial division. Since mestizaje is said to involve relations between European men and indigenous or African women, gender is a key factor in Latin American genomics and in the analyses in this book. Also important are links between contemporary genomics and recent moves toward official multiculturalism in Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico. One of the first studies of its kind, Mestizo Genomics sheds new light on the interrelations between "race," identity, and genomics in Latin America. Contributors. Race mixture, or mestizaje, has played a critical role in the history, culture, and politics of Latin America. In Degrees of Mixture, Degrees of Freedom, Peter Wade draws on a multidisciplinary research study in Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia. He shows how Latin American elites and outside observers have emphasized mixture's democratizing potential, depicting it as a useful resource for addressing problems of racism (claiming that race mixture undoes racial difference and hierarchy), while Latin American scientists participate in this narrative with claims that genetic studies of mestizos can help isolate genetic contributors to diabetes and obesity and improve health for all. Wade argues that, in the process, genomics produces biologized versions of racialized difference within the nation and the region, but a comparative approach nuances the simple idea that highly racialized societies give rise to highly racialized genomics. Wade examines the tensions between mixture and purity, and between equality and hierarchy in liberal political orders, exploring how ideas and scientific data about genetic mixture are produced and circulate through complex networks.

Half-breed Genomic presents a series of investigations that study race and half-breed. The researches in the laboratories of Mexico, Brazil and Colombia, seek to know the genetic, political and social area that constitute the race. The authors emphasize that the study of this is not exhaustive in research on the genomic dimension, but to understand it better, we must consider a series of social, cultural and political aspects that revolve around it. That is why this book invites us to know how the concepts of nation and half-breed interweave to define the race in Latin America.

In order to more fully understand what we mean by "race", social scientists need to engage genetics, medicine, and health. While the contributors of this volume reject pseudoscience and hierarchical ways of looking at race, they make the claim that it is time to reassess the Western-based, "social construction" paradigm. Arguing that race is not merely socially constructed, the contributors offer a provocative collection of views on the way that social scientistsmust reconsider the idea of race in the age of genomics.

In recent years medicalization, the process of making something medical, has gained considerable ground and a position in everyday discourse. In this multidisciplinary collection of original essays, the authors expertly consider how issues around medicalization have developed, ways in which it is changing, and the potential shapes it will take in the future. They develop a unique argument that medicalization, biomedicalization, pharmaceuticalization and geneticization are related and co-evolving processes, present throughout the globe. This is an ideal addition to anthropology, sociology and STS courses about medicine and health.

The gene is embedded in various domains of knowledge and practices in which doctors, scientists and public health experts make sense of diabetes, genetic disease, health and heredity in Mexico. Medical genetics in the (specialized pediatric) clinic, which deals with mostly single-gene disorders, congenital metabolic disorders and chromosomal abnormalities, takes up a marginalized/small place in health care policy or investments. The growing presence of diabetes as a pubic health problem has led to campaigns instructing people to eat better and exercise more. But it has also been at the heart of genomics research interested in the particular genomic makeup of Mexicans -- made unique by ancestral contributions to a mestizo genome -- and its relations/as an explanation for heightened predisposition to diabetes and other common chronic disorders. Recent work has proposed ways to explain the growing presence of diabetes in Mexico through a biosocial approach that considers the role of the (social) environment in the onset of disease. Epigenetics, in studying how environmental factors can influence gene expression, brings in new ways to think about genes and the articulation of these in relation to illness and heredity. As scientists combine biological data with inquiries into the social circumstances in the communities they study, epigenetics actively brings the environment in and gives scientists tools to think about how the environment becomes embodied. These studies provide room for biomedical and social scientists to (re)think how body and environment act together, opening the door to new ways to conceptualize genetic predisposition and disease.
