Comprehensive Biochemistry, Volume 21: Metabolism of Vitamins and Trace Elements focuses on the processes, reactions, methodologies, and principles involved in the metabolism of vitamins and trace elements, including catabolism, enzymatic synthesis, absorption, and metabolic functions. The selection first elaborates on the biosynthesis of thiamine and riboflavin and metabolism of vitamin B6. Topics include absorption and transport of vitamin B6, catabolism of vitamin B6, mechanism of riboflavin synthetase from yeast, enzymatic synthesis of thiamine, biogenesis of thiazole, and interconversion of various forms of vitamin B6. The book also ponders on the biosynthesis of pantothenic acid and coenzyme A and metabolism of biotin, analogues, folic acid, pteridine derivatives, and cobalamins. Discussions focus on the uses of radioactive cobalamins in metabolic studies, absorption of cobalamins, pteroylpolyglutamates, and biosynthesis of folate compounds, interconversions, and degradations. The manuscript examines the metabolism and metabolic function of trace elements, including iron, zinc, copper, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, fluorine, and iodine. The selection is a vital source of data for researchers interested in the metabolism of vitamins and trace elements.

The major change in the format of the fifth edition is the presentation of the book in two volumes, necessitated by the rapidly increasing knowledge of metabolism, interactions, and requirements of trace elements ... The guiding principle was to present the minimum of results that would serve as a logical foundation for the description of the present state of knowledge. Recent results of research were accommodated by devoting new chapters to the subjects "Methodology of Trace Element Research" and "Quality Assurance for Trace Element Analysis" and by expanding the discussion of lithium and aluminum in separate, new chapters. The first two subjects are of outstanding importance as determinants of future progress. The concern for the quality of analytical data motivated the authors of the individual chapters to review critically and, where necessary, revise analytical data presented in the previous editions. The rapid progress of trace analytical methodology since the mid-1970s has changed what had been accepted as normal for the concentrations of many trace elements in tissues and foods. The new data reflect the present state of the art in trace element analysis, but they may be subject to future revision.

Abstract: The proper balance and interactions of nutrients in the human body are the subjects of ongoing studies; a review of literature in these fields for 1977 is presented, covering deficiencies, metabolism, animal and human studies, toxicity and megadoses, requirements, bioavailability, etc. Nutrients investigated are vitamins A, D, E, and C; thiamine, riboflovin, pyridoxine, folic acid and vitamin B 12; and trace elements such as zinc, copper, iron, chromium and cobalt. Information is drawn from over 700 published articles.

Abstract: Each essential trace element, with the exception of cobalt, is described in terms of its biochemistry, metabolism, effects of deficiency and excess, physiology, interactions with other substances and toxicity. New pieces of information about trace elements in the human body are being found and interlocked in a mammoth jigsaw of knowledge. Zinc, for example, is now known to be needed for 70 metalloenzymes and is essential in the synthesis of deoxyribonuclcic acid (DNA). The toxic elements (cadmium, lead and mercury) are discussed, as well as the newly discovered roles for nickel, silicon, vanaduim and tin. A short history describes the development of knowledge of eachelement and its relevance to humans. The treatment of disease and abnormality is enhanced by a greater awareness of the metabolic functions of the trace elements; the focus on new developments should benefit researchers, nutritionists and physicians.
