En este volumen se recogen las clases y los seminarios que Heidegger impartió en 1941 sobre lo que él consideraba la cumbre de la metafísica del idealismo alemán: el pensamiento de Schelling relativo a la esencia de la libertad. Schelling define la libertad desde la distinción entre fundamento y existencia. La libertad no es ni el ser ni su manifestación, sino la diferencia entre ambos. Los eones son los despliegues existentes de sendas temporalidades de la naturaleza y del hombre como manifestaciones divinas, en los que puede tener lugar la libertad justamente en la medida en que se diferencian del fundamento. De una forma pedagógica y reflexiva, Heidegger explica la historia filosófica de los conceptos de fundamento y existencia, desde la escolástica medieval hasta la recepción de Ser y tiempo, pasando por Leibniz y, con especial detenimiento, por los existencialismos de Kierkegaard y Jaspers.

Este libro nos acerca al misterioso silencio de Heidegger durante el decenio de 1936 a 1946, mientras Europa debatía su destino en la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Fue en este período cuando el filósofo comenzó a desarrollar el famoso giro en su pensamiento (die Kehre) y se confrontó con las figuras de Nietzsche —el último metafísico, cuya voluntad de poder caracteriza la esencia de la Gestellt tecnológica occidental— y la poesía de Hölderlin, en la que aletea el ocaso de los dioses y la espera del último Dios. No obstante, se ignoraba la importancia de su encuentro con Schelling y sus escritos sobre la libertad y las edades del mundo, al que Heidegger concedió especial importancia y en el que encontró elementos para estudiar la filosofía como el saber propio del«inicio». Este «inicio» es la piedra angular del nuevo pensamiento posmetafísico que restaurará la historia del Ser, superando su olvido y en el que el papel de la libertad es fundamental. Heidegger inauguró así una novedosa y original forma de pensar y poetizar, que tenía su origen en la relación Tierra-Mundo-Dioses-Hombres. Este volumen, por tanto, nos adentra en uno de los espacios más fecundos y fascinantes del pensamiento filosófico: el que une la filosofía oculta de Schelling y el famoso giro de la filosofía heideggerina. El presente estudio es la primera monografía en lengua castellana que analiza de manera sistemática y exhaustiva el pensamiento de F. W. J. Schelling (1775-1854) que es, junto con Fichte y Hegel, uno de los principales representantes del Idealismo alemán. El libro se centra especialmente en su denominada "filosofía intermedia", el periodo más importante pero más desconocido de su obra. Esta etapa comprende desde 1809, año en que aparece el ensayo sobre la libertad, hasta su filosofía tardía y más oscura, la Filosofía de la Mitología y la Revelación, en la que Schelling analiza distintas mitologías como presupuesto básico para entender la esencia del Cristianismo como hecho histórico. Frente a aquella filosofía de la razón de Hegel -mera filosofía negativa basada sólo en el pensamiento- Schelling propone una filosofía positiva que da cuenta de la mundanidad e historicidad de todo lo viviente: una verdadera "ciencia de la vida". Schelling elabora una filosofía del Espíritu opuesta a la de Hegel, un sistema de la libertad que tolera una concepción sistemática de la razón que no se opone ni niega la libertad -en concreto, la libertad humana-, sino que requiere de ella y la fundamenta, marcando el paso de una metafísica de la razón a una metafísica de la voluntad. Frente al esquema clásico que entiende a Schelling como un eslabón intermedio en la cadena que iría de Kant a Hegel, Pérez-Borbujo presenta el pensamiento schellinguiano como la verdadera cumbre del Idealismo alemán, que se abre ahora al hecho radical de la existencia, a un dato de revelación que precede a la razón, inaugurando el camino que luego seguirán Schopenhauer, Kierkegaard, Freud o Nietzsche. Este libro presenta por primera vez al lector un Schelling "coherente y acabado", evolutivo, pero profundamente contemporáneo con las corrientes de pensamiento que surgen a finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX.

The work of the later Schelling (in and after 1809) seems antithetical to that of Nietzsche: one a Romantic, idealist and Christian, the other Dionysian, anti-idealist and anti-Christian. Still, there is a very meaningful and educative dialogue to be found between Schelling and Nietzsche on the topics of reason, freedom and religion. Both of them start their philosophy with a similar critique of the Western tradition, which to them is overly dualist, rationalist and anti-organic (metaphysically, ethically, religiously, politically). In response, they hope to inculcate a more lively view of reality in which a new understanding of freedom takes center stage. This freedom can be revealed and strengthened through a proper approach to religion, one that neither disconnects from nor subordinates religion to reason. Religion is the dialogical other to reason, one that refreshes and animates our attempts to navigate the world autonomously. In doing so, Schelling and Nietzsche open up new avenues of thinking about (the relationship between) freedom, reason and religion.

The Berlin lectures in The Grounding of Positive Philosophy, appearing here for the first time in English, advance Schelling's final "existential system" as an alternative to modernity's reduction of philosophy to a purely formal science of reason. The onetime protégé of Fichte and benefactor of Hegel, Schelling accuses German Idealism of dealing "with the world of lived experience just as a surgeon who promises to cure your ailing leg by amputating it." Schelling's appeal in Berlin for a positive, existential philosophy found an interested audience in Kierkegaard, Engels, Feuerbach, Marx, and Bakunin. His account of the ecstatic nature of existence and reason proved to be decisive for the work of Paul Tillich and Martin Heidegger. Also, Schelling's critique of reason's quixotic attempt at self-grounding anticipates similar criticisms leveled by poststructuralism, but without sacrificing philosophy's power to provide a positive account of truth and meaning.
