"The number and amplitude of emerging infectious diseases is increasing. Characterizing novel or re-emerging infections is aided by the availability of pathogen genomes and metagenomes. Private and distributed next generation genomic sequencing data is generated worldwide in medical clinics, hospitals and sequencing centers. WWH-MetaMonitor is an application that exploits pathogen genomic sequences and the contribution of genomic comparative analysis to monitor and understand the epidemiology of recently emerged infectious diseases. It is implemented on the recently developed WWH framework, a platform for running distributed applications in a multi-cluster environment based on YARN. The distributed and "on data" computation that WWH provides fits the scenario of globally spread independent sequencing centers that produce massive amounts of sequence data that need to be analyzed as a whole without being transferred, and the nature of modern times outbreaks, which spread rapidly on a global scale. The work on WWH-MetaMonitor was presented at "Strata + Hadoop World in New York 2016" conference, and also yielded 11 U.S. patent applications: Methods and apparatus implementing data model for disease monitoring, characterization and investigation (15/281,248) ; Distributed data processing platform for biological surveillance using genomic and epidemiological comparisons (14/984,004) ; Automated metagenomic monitoring and characterization (14/983,971) ; Metagenomics-based characterization using genomic and epidemiological comparisons (14/983,981) ; Distributed data processing platform for metagenomic monitoring and characterization (14/983,991) ; Distributed data processing platform for metagenomic epidemiological investigation (14/983,943) ; Distributed data processing platform for biological surveillance using big data profiles (14/983,952) ; Metagenomics-based biological surveillance system with distributed sequencing centers (14/983,958) ; Metagenomics-based biological surveillance system using big data profiles (14/983,914) ; Automated metagenomic epidemiological investigation (14/983,920) ; Reasoning on data model for disease monitoring, characterization and investigation (14/983,932)." -- from abstract.

Emerging infectious diseases are often due to environmental disruption, which exposes microbes to a different niche that selects for new virulence traits and facilitates transmission between animals and humans. Thus, health of humans also depends upon health of animals and the environment – a concept called One Health. This book presents core concepts, compelling evidence, successful applications, and remaining challenges of One Health approaches to thwarting the threat of emerging infectious disease. Written by scientists working in the field, this book will provide a series of ""stories"" about how disruption of the environment and transmission from animal hosts is responsible for emerging human and animal diseases. • Explains the concept of One Health and the history of the One Health paradigm shift . • Traces the emergence of devastating new diseases in both animals and humans.• Presents case histories of notable, new zoonoses, including West Nile virus, hantavirus, Lyme disease, SARS, and salmonella.• Links several epidemic zoonoses with the environmental factors that promote them.• Offers insight into the mechanisms of microbial evolution toward pathogenicity.• Discusses the many causes behind the emergence of antibiotic resistance.• Presents new technologies and approaches for public health disease surveillance.• Offers political and bureaucratic strategies for promoting the global acceptance of One Health.

The scope of this book is to present the most recent trends based on omic analyses of microorganisms causing diseases in farm animals and how these approaches result in new strategies of treatment. The topics in this book include fasciolosis, avian coccidiosis, bovine anaplasmosis, tick-borne diseases, and babesiosis, among others. This book presents the recent advances in the omic field with an emphasis on how these analyses have led researchers to know the mechanisms that pathogens use to invade and colonize the host cell of farm animals. In this way, new treatments of control and prevention can be employed.

Hemorrhagic Fever Viruses written by Maria S. Salvato and has been published by Humana Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-10-07 with Medical categories.

This volume presents protocols that analyze and explore hemorrhagic fever viruses (HFV). This book is divided into 5 parts: Part I begins with an overview on predicting viral pandemics and then covers methods for surveillance, diagnosis, and classification of HFV. This includes an antibody capture method using Lassa virus antigens. Part II discusses structural studies and reverse genetics of HFV. The chapters in this part describe envelope glycoprotein membrane fusion studies, arenavirus nucleocapsid protein, and the use of virus-like-particles to study viral egress. Part III explores in vivo models of HFV infections, and contains chapters on murine, guinea pig, and primate models for HFV, and methods to obtain a subset of primary human liver cells that can be cultured long-term. Part IV looks into immune assays and vaccine production for HFV. The chapters in this section cover the attenuated vaccine for Argentine HFV, detecting virus-antibody immune complexes in secondary dengue infections, and DNA vaccination. Part V discusses host responses to viral hemorrhagic fever, and contains chapters on identifying host restrictions to Junín or Dengue infection, and a cell-culture method to assess coagulation after HFV infection. Written in the highly successful Methods in Molecular Biology series format, chapters include introductions to their respective topics, lists of the necessary materials and reagents, step-by-step, readily reproducible laboratory protocols, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Thorough and cutting-edge, Hemorrhagic Fever Viruses: Methods and Protocols is a valuable resource for scientists and researchers who want to bridge the gap between virus recognition in surveillance and understanding host responses to infection.

Antimicrobial Resistance written by Mihai Mares and has been published by BoD – Books on Demand this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021-03-03 with Medical categories.

Tackling the realities of the antimicrobial resistance (AMR) situation today is no longer uncommon. Many battles have been fought in the past since the discovery of antibiotics between man and microbes. In the tussle of new antibiotic modifications, the transmission of resistant genes, both vertically and horizontally unveils yet another resistant attribute for the microbe, for it only to be faced with a more powerful, wide spectrum antibiotic; the cycle continues-and the winner is yet to be known. This book aims to provide some insight into various molecular mechanisms, agricultural mitigation methods, and the One Health applications to maybe, just maybe, tip the scales towards us.
