Was sollte Journalismus in einer demokratischen Gesellschaft leisten? Wie lässt sich diese Leistung im Sinne wünschenswerter Nachrichtenqualität messbar machen? Und welche Faktoren im Prozess journalistischer Nachrichtenproduktion prägen die Qualität der Berichterstattung? Diesen Fragen widmet sich die vorliegende Studie. Sie untersucht, welche Anforderungen an Journalismus aus Perspektive einer repräsentativen, deliberativen und partizipatorischen Auffassung von Demokratie zu stellen sind, und schlägt eine demokratietheoretisch fundierte Konzeptualisierung von Nachrichtenqualität vor. Diese beinhaltet einerseits professionelle Standards der Berichterstattung – das Wie der journalistischen Vermittlung von Inhalten – und andererseits spezifische Vorstellungen von Akteur:innen-Vielfalt – das Wer hinter den Stimmen, die in der Berichterstattung zu Wort kommen. Um zu verstehen, welche Einflüsse wie auf Nachrichtenqualität wirken, entwirft die Studie einen sozialintegrativen Theorierahmen, der Journalist:innen als Handelnde mit den Strukturen verschränkt, innerhalb derer sie operieren. Es wird skizziert, wie teilsystematische Orientierungen im Journalismus, normative Erwartungen an Journalismus und spezifische Interaktionen von Journalist:innen mit ihren internen und externen Bezugsgruppen im Prozess der Nachrichtenproduktion zusammenwirken und verhandelt werden – und so Nachrichtenqualität entscheidend mitbestimmen. Empirisch stützt sich die Studie auf ein dreiteiliges Mixed-Methods-Design. Sie kombiniert eine quantitative Inhaltsanalyse politischer Berichterstattung aus Österreich, eine nachgelagerte quantitative Befragung der Journalist:innen, welche die Nachrichtenbeiträge verfasst haben, sowie retrospektive Rekonstruktionen ausgewählter Beiträge zusammen mit ihren jeweiligen Verfasser:innen. So kann die Qualität der Berichterstattung in einen unmittelbaren Konnex mit der Realität journalistischer Nachrichtenproduktion gestellt werden. Die Ergebnisse lassen Nachrichtenqualität als multidirektional komplexes Phänomen erscheinen, das sich einfachen Kausalitäten entzieht. Journalistische Kultur erscheint dabei als Schlüssel für die Sicherung eines hochqualitativen Journalismus. Auch normative Erwartungen können die Qualität der Berichterstattung positiv mitbestimmen, wenn sie an aktive Aushandlungsprozesse mit Bezugsgruppen rückgebunden sind. Zwar weist der österreichische Journalismus eine relative Resilienz gegenüber dem direkten Einfluss von politischen Akteur:innen auf – sie können aber mittelbar auf inhaltsprägende Strukturen einwirken. Schließlich belegt die Studie, dass die Vielfalt der Perspektiven in journalistischen Diskursen entscheidend von der Autonomie abhängt, die Journalist:innen zur Verfügung steht.

Metalanguage brings together new, original contributions on people's knowledge about language and representations of language, e.g., representations of dialects, styles, utterances, stances and goals in relation to sociolinguistic theory, sociolinguistic accounts of language variation, and accounts of linguistic usage.
