WINNER OF THE HWA NON-FICTION CROWN AN IRISH TIMES BOOK OF THE YEAR A NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW NOTABLE BOOK A FINALIST FOR THE NATIONAL BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD Elizabeth Anscombe: defiantly brilliant, chain-smoking, trouser-wearing Catholic and (eventual) mother of seven. Philippa Foot: pathalogically discreet, quietly rebellious granddaughter of a US president. Mary Midgley: witty scholar and careful observer of humans and animals alike. Iris Murdoch: aspiring novelist and Francophile with the power to seduce (almost) anyone. Written with expertise and flair, Metaphysical Animals is a vivid portrait of the endeavours and achievements of these four remarkable women. As undergraduates at Oxford during the Second World War, they shared ideas (as well as shoes, sofas and lovers). From the disorder and despair of war, they went on to breathe new life into philosophy, creating a radically fresh way of thinking about freedom, reality and human goodness that is there for us today. But what about simpler creatures? Fish? Honeybees? Crabs? Turning to the artificial realm, what about robots? This book presents answers to these questions.

This the story of four philosophers--Elizabeth Anscombe, Philippa Foot, Mary Midgley, and Iris Murdoch--who helped shape the intellectual history of the 20th century, reviving the ethical imagination of their time and ours. The Second World War gave these four women their chance, as they pursued roles formerly reserved for men. But they succeeded because of their formidable intelligence and because of who they were: a combative Catholic convert who never cared whom she offended; her unlikely best friend, an atheist who grew up in a world of class and manners; a woman who spent a decade and a half raising her boys, publishing the first of her sixteen books at almost 60; and a mystical novelist who gradually drifted away from the academy. This is a book for those interested in these vivid characters, in the first school of women philosophers, or in alternative ways of thinking about how to live.

The Philosophy Of Animal Minds written by Robert W. Lurz and has been published by Cambridge University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-09-03 with Philosophy categories.
This volume is a collection of fourteen essays by leading philosophers on issues concerning the nature, existence, and our knowledge of animal minds. The nature of animal minds has been a topic of interest to philosophers since the origins of philosophy, and recent years have seen significant philosophical engagement with the subject. However, there is no volume that represents the current state of play in this important and growing field. The purpose of this volume is to highlight the state of the debate. The issues which are covered include whether and to what degree animals think in a language or in iconic structures, possess concepts, are conscious, self-aware, metacognize, attribute states of mind to others, and have emotions, as well as issues pertaining to our knowledge of and the scientific standards for attributing mental states to animals.

Without Offending Humans written by Elisabeth de Fontenay and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012 with Animals (Philosophy) categories.
This study pursues the investigation Fontenay began in her magnum opus, 'The Silence of the Beasts: Philosophy Confronts Animality' with a series of essays of somewhat more topical reach. Fontenay's perspective is resolutely informed by Continental Philosophy, which brings her to articulate a very strong critique of the pragmatist frame through which animal rights are often defended. Fontenay seeks to maintain the anthropological difference between man and animal that Singer and Cavalieri openly and brazenly, upon Fontenay's account, ignore.

Charles Hartshorne is one of the premier metaphysicians and philosophers of religion in the twentieth century. He has written extensively on animals, both as a philosopher of nature and as an expert on bird song. Since the publication of Creative Synthesis and Philosophic Method in 1970, he has devoted a great deal of attention to animals. Among the main issues he advances is that the relationship between human beings and animals helps us to better understand our relationship with God.

Iris Murdoch S Practical Metaphysics written by Lesley Jamieson and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-07-29 with Philosophy categories.
This book explores Iris Murdoch as a philosopher who, through her distinctive methodology, exploits the advantages of having a mind on the borders of literature and politics in her early career writings (pre-The Sovereignty of Good). By focusing on a single decade of Murdoch’s early career, Jamieson tracks connections between her views on the state of literature and politics in postwar Britain and her approach to the philosophy of mind and moral philosophy. Furthermore, this close study reveals that, far from a stylistic quirk, Murdoch’s use of metaphors, analogies, and other literary devices is internal to her methodology. Finally, rather than asking what Murdoch’s views are, this work will ask “what is Murdoch trying to achieve with her writings and public lectures, and how does she go about this?” By answering the latter question, we will have a new strategy for interpreting her writings more generally. The book contributes to the growing body of scholarship focusing on Iris Murdoch’s philosophical writings, and on women in the history of analytic philosophy.
