"Metaphysics and Magic: The Intersection of Physics and Philosophy" offers a profound exploration of metaphysical spirituality through practical applications that bridge ancient wisdom with contemporary understanding. This comprehensive work begins with the foundations of metaphysics, tracing its historical development from Aristotelian concepts to modern interpretations. Readers will discover how ontology—the study of being—can be applied to everyday life, revealing the hidden metaphysical structures that shape our reality. The book delves deeply into Aristotelian metaphysics, demonstrating how concepts like substance and accident, potentiality and actuality, and the four causes can serve as practical tools for analyzing life situations. The Organon, Aristotle's logical toolkit, is presented as a means to structure thinking and develop convincing arguments based on sound metaphysical principles.A significant portion explores transcendental philosophy and self-knowledge, offering meditative practices for contemplating fundamental questions of existence. These exercises help readers cultivate rational thinking while acknowledging the limits of human understanding—balancing speculation with experience in the pursuit of wisdom. The intersection of physics and philosophy forms a central theme, examining how natural laws can be viewed through a metaphysical lens. This approach reveals profound connections between physical phenomena and metaphysical thinking, offering a deeper appreciation of nature's underlying order and beauty. The final sections address practical applications of metaphysical spirituality, including contemplative exercises, the thoughtful integration of magic and metaphysics, and the cultivation of philosophical attitudes like wonder and equanimity. These practices help readers develop a philosophically grounded spirituality that enhances daily life.Whether you're interested in the theoretical foundations of metaphysics or seeking practical wisdom for navigating existence, this book provides a thoughtful guide to understanding reality beyond the physical—revealing the magical interconnections between mind, matter, and meaning.

"Here is a well-known story. Before sometime in the early modern period, Europeans believed that knowledge of nature came solely from reading books, above all those of Aristotle. Then the humanist re-discovery and translation of various ancient philosophical works led the number of "authorities" to grow, and alongside a monolithic "Aristotelianism" emerged any number of "-isms": Stoicism, Epicureanism, Platonism, Skepticism, and so on. Gradually, philosophers realized that they need not need rely on authorities at all, and began to use their own reason, coupled with experience and experiment. Scholasticism and humanism were dead, and the "Age of Reason" had begun, with Descartes as its iconoclastic father (perhaps with a little help from Bacon)"--

Religion would be impossible without imagination. Imagination provides content that otherwise escapes discourse and perception. Thus, it opens up a productive realm for creative involvement that keeps religion from sinking into trivialities or abstractions. The contributions in the present volume explore in various ways potentialities and problems linked to imagination's role in the context of religion. The book challenges readers to think again and think differently about imagination in religion – which, in itself, involves the power of imagination. The book opens up fresh perspectives on the interactive dynamics between imagination and various faculties or dimensions of life. Imagination might be involved in thinking, perceiving, contemplation, and in practices. The contributors to the volume are all members of the Nordic Society for the Philosophy of Religion. Espen Dahl, Professor of Systematic Theology, The Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø. Jan-Olav Henriksen, Professor of Philosophy of Religion, MF Norwegian School of Theology, Religion and Society, Oslo. Marius T. Mjaaland, Professor of Philosophy of Religion, Faculty of Theology, University of Oslo, Norway.

Good And Real written by Gary L. Drescher and has been published by MIT Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Philosophy categories.

Examining a series of provocative paradoxes about consciousness, choice, ethics, and other topics, Good and Real tries to reconcile a purely mechanical view of the universe with key aspects of our subjective impressions of our own existence. In Good and Real, Gary Drescher examines a series of provocative paradoxes about consciousness, choice, ethics, quantum mechanics, and other topics, in an effort to reconcile a purely mechanical view of the universe with key aspects of our subjective impressions of our own existence. Many scientists suspect that the universe can ultimately be described by a simple (perhaps even deterministic) formalism; all that is real unfolds mechanically according to that formalism. But how, then, is it possible for us to be conscious, or to make genuine choices? And how can there be an ethical dimension to such choices? Drescher sketches computational models of consciousness, choice, and subjunctive reasoning--what would happen if this or that were to occur? --to show how such phenomena are compatible with a mechanical, even deterministic universe. Analyses of Newcomb's Problem (a paradox about choice) and the Prisoner's Dilemma (a paradox about self-interest vs. altruism, arguably reducible to Newcomb's Problem) help bring the problems and proposed solutions into focus. Regarding quantum mechanics, Drescher builds on Everett's relative-state formulation--but presenting a simplified formalism, accessible to laypersons--to argue that, contrary to some popular impressions, quantum mechanics is compatible with an objective, deterministic physical reality, and that there is no special connection between quantum phenomena and consciousness. In each of several disparate but intertwined topics ranging from physics to ethics, Drescher argues that a missing technical linchpin can make the quest for objectivity seem impossible, until the elusive technical fix is at hand.

Philosophical Essays East And West written by Michael Slote and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-09-27 with Philosophy categories.

The book is a much-expanded version of the Kuang-Yi Liu Lectures in Chinese Philosophy the author delivered in Taiwan in December 2022. The book brings together essays on Chinese philosophy, Western philosophy, and the proposed interaction between them. The purpose is not mainly exegetical or descriptive; the book seeks to expand our philosophical understanding in various directions. Philosophical Essays East and West shows how Chinese thought can help Western analytic philosophy develop further and can even serve as a corrective to certain central aspects of traditional and contemporary Western philosophical thinking. We Western analytic philosophers don’t think we have much if anything to learn from Chinese philosophical ideas. But we do, we do, and much of the present book seeks to show how. Studying topics in ethics, philosophy of mind, epistemology, and aesthetics, this book puts Chinese philosophy in conversation with traditional problems in Western analytic philosophy. It also proposes aphorism as an important method in both traditions.

Sketch For A Systematic Metaphysics written by D. M. Armstrong and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2010-07-29 with Philosophy categories.

David Armstrong sets out his metaphysical system in a set of concise and lively chapters each dealing with one aspect of the world. He begins with the assumption that all that exists is the physical world of space-time. On this foundation he constructs a coherent metaphysical scheme that gives plausible answers to many of the great problems of metaphysics. He gives accounts of properties, relations, and particulars; laws of nature; modality; abstract objects such as numbers; and time and mind.
