Kant verfolgt in seinen ethischen Grundlegungsschriften das wiederholt erklärte Ziel, "eine reine Moralphilosophie zu bearbeiten, die von allem, was nur empirisch sein mag und zur Anthropologie gehört, völlig gesäubert wäre" (Grundlegung, KW IV, 13). Die damit zugleich beanspruchte strikte Trennung einer erfahrungsfreien Metaphysik praktischer Vernunft von empirischer Anthropologie wird im vorliegenden Buch kritisch in Hinblick auf ihre systematische Tragfähigkeit für die von Kant ausgearbeitete Moralphilosophie überprüft. Dabei zeigt sich, dass Kant den begründungstheoretischen Status der empirisch-anthropologischen Elemente, die er bei der konkreten Ausgestaltung seiner moralischen Pflichtenlehre offenkundig in Ansatz bringt, weder hinreichend expliziert noch geltungstheoretisch in Hinblick auf die Kohärenz seiner dichotomischen Wissenschaftsaufspaltung reflektiert. Vielmehr überschätzt Kant die metaphysische Reichweite und den streng apriorischen Charakter seiner Ethik und Rechtsphilosophie insbesondere in seinen diesbezüglichen programmatischen Äußerungen. Erst durch die Korrektur dieses Selbstverständnisses anhand einer systematischen Rekonstruktion und Beurteilung der Kantischen Argumentationsschritte erschließt sich die substanzielle Bedeutung seines Terminus "Metaphysik der Sitten". Im Rahmen dieser Korrektur tritt zudem die Parallelität der Kantischen "Metaphysik der Sitten" zu seinen Metaphysischen Anfangsgründen der Naturwissenschaft zutage, die - unbeschadet ihres apriorischen Geltungsanspruchs - ebenfalls auf empirische Begriffe und Fakten Bezug nehmen.
