Immanuel Kants »Metaphysische Anfangsgründe der Naturwissenschaft« (1786) wurden bereits von Kants Zeitgenossen als eine sehr schwierige Schrift eingeschätzt, schwieriger noch als Kants Hauptwerk, die »Kritik der reinen Vernunft«. Und noch zwei Jahrhunderte nach ihrer Entstehung ist die Schrift Gegenstand kontroverser Diskussionen. Der von Kant vorgenommenen Einteilung folgend erläutert dieser Kommentar nach einer ausführlichen Analyse der programmatischen Vorrede die vier Schritte - Phoronomie, Dynamik, Mechanik, Phänomenologie - von Kants dynamistischer Materietheorie sowie deren Legitimation. Es wird dabei deutlich, welche fundamentale Funktion der Materiebegriff in Metaphysik und Naturlehre besitzt: was auch immer wissenschaftlich erkannt wird, es muss Bezug haben zur materiellen Substanz im Raum. Da Kant in seiner Bestimmung des Materiebegriffs durch den Begriff der Bewegung in weiten Teilen dem Kategorienschema der »Kritik der reinen Vernunft« folgt, ist der Kommentar bestrebt, die Schrift vor dem Hintergrund seiner Kritischen Philosophie zu rekonstruieren. Die Zeugnisse aus dieser Schaffensphase Kants werden in folgender Abstufung, die sich an den Kriterien der Authentizität sowie der Publizität der Texte orientiert, zum Beleg von Aussagen herangezogen: 1) Schriften, die Kants imprimatur besitzen, 2) Briefe von Kant, 3) Notizen aus dem Handschriftlichen Nachlass, 4) Mit-, Nach- bzw. Abschriften, die Studenten von Kants Vorlesungen angefertigt haben. Als weitere wichtige Quellen dieser ersten durchgehenden und detaillierten Erschließung des Texts wird zum einen Kants eigene vorkritische Naturphilosophie herangezogen, zum anderen werden Bezüge der Schrift zur weitgehend newtonisch geprägten Naturphilosophie seiner Zeit hergestellt, die in der Forschung bisher vernachlässigt wurden. Der Kommentar verfährt gemäß der Interpretationsmaxime größtmöglicher Rationalität des Autors und orientiert sich in diesem Sinne an den Kriterien Konsistenz und Kohärenz in Bezug auf die nähere und fernere Textumgebung. Insofern sich der Autor dieses Kommentars kritisch zum Kantischen Text verhält, geschieht dies nicht von einem externen philosophischen oder naturwissenschaftlichen Standpunkt aus. Bezugspunkt der Kritik ist vielmehr Kants Theoretische Philosophie, wie dieser sie in den 70er Jahren entwickelt und vornehmlich in der Kritik und den Prolegomena publiziert hat.

A new translation of Immanuel Kant’s 1786 Metaphysical Foundations of Natural Science (Metaphysische Anfangsgründe der Naturwissenschaft) in modern American English with the original German manuscript in the back for reference. This is Volume VI in The Complete Works of Immanuel Kant from Newcomb Livraria Press. Published one year before the Critique of Pure Reasons, Metaphysical Foundations is Kant's methodology which would be used in his famous Critique. He attempts to deconstruct an Empiricist Epistemology and show that a priori principles, which are inherently metaphysical in nature, are necessary for the possibility of science to happen in the first place. He is reconciling the new mechanical causality concepts created by Newton with their philosophic preconceptions. While his theory of Phoronomy and movement are not useful to modern physics, this work outlines some basic Epistemological Platonic criticisms of Material Determinism which would be proven Empirically, ironically, by Einstein's Quantum theories and modern theories of perceptual consciousness. One of the most fascinating contributions Kant brings to modern Science through this work is in Quantum Mechanics. Kant, not Newton or Einstein, was the first to posit the theory of "action at a distance" which would eventually be proven by the observation of Quantum Entanglement. In the second section of this treaty, he writes Theorem 7 as "The attraction essential to all matter is a direct effect of the same on others through empty space" Kant's Foundations is a great primer on his Critique and outlines the pure materialism, and the Humic ethics which follows, against which Kant is attempting to correct.
