INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER — United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and China (Wall Street Journal, Associated Press, Nielsen Bookscan, Publishers Weekly, USA Today, Toronto Star, Globe & Mail, BookNet Canada, Bookseller.com, Bookdao/Nielsen, JD, DangDang) Tim Sweeney (CEO of Fortnite-maker Epic Games): “Matthew Ball’s essays have defined, analyzed, and inspired the Metaverse for years. His book is an approachable and essential guide to the strategic, technical, and philosophical foundations of this new medium.” Derek Thompson (Atlantic staff writer and national best-selling author of Hit Makers): “This book feels like a rare achievement: a definitive statement about an emerging phenomenon that could shape the digital world, the global economy, and the very experience of human consciousness.” From the leading theorist of the Metaverse comes the definitive account of the next internet: what the Metaverse is, what it will take to build it, and what it means for all of us. The term “Metaverse” is suddenly everywhere, from the front pages of national newspapers and the latest fashion trends to the plans of the most powerful companies in history. It is already shaping the policy platforms of the US government, the European Union, and the Chinese Communist Party. But what, exactly, is the Metaverse? As pioneering theorist and venture capitalist Matthew Ball explains, it is a persistent and interconnected network of 3D virtual worlds that will eventually serve as the gateway to most online experiences, and also underpin much of the physical world. For decades, these ideas have been limited to science fiction and video games, but they are now poised to revolutionize every industry and function, from finance and healthcare to education, consumer products, city planning, dating, and well beyond. Taking us on an expansive tour of the “next internet,” Ball demonstrates that many proto-Metaverses are already here, such as Fortnite, Minecraft, and Roblox. Yet these offer only a glimpse of what is to come. Ball presents a comprehensive definition of the Metaverse before explaining the technologies that will power it—and the breakthroughs that will be necessary to fully realize it. He addresses the governance challenges the Metaverse entails; investigates the role of Web3, blockchains, and NFTs; and predicts Metaverse winners and losers. Most importantly, he examines many of the Metaverse’s almost unlimited applications. The internet will no longer be at arm’s length; instead, it will surround us, with much of our lives, labor, and leisure taking place inside the Metaverse. Bringing clarity and authority to a frequently misunderstood concept, Ball foresees trillions of dollars in new value—and the radical reshaping of society.

Technology often delivers unexpected outcomes that no one foresees. On the other hand, the most significant advances were frequently predicteddecades ago. Vannevar Bush proposed the "Memex" in 1945, a single device that would hold all books, records, and communications and mechanically connect them by association. This idea was then utilized to construct the concept of "hypertext" (a term coined two decades later), which aided the development of the World Wide Web (developed another two decades later). Although the "Streaming Wars" has only recently begun, the first streaming video was broadcast more than 25 years ago. Many of the characteristics of this so-called war, such as essentially endless supplies of content, interactivity, dynamic and targeted marketing, on-demand playback, and thebenefit of combining content and delivery, have been speculated about for decades. In this way, the broad contours of future solutions are frequently anticipated and, in some ways, decided upon well before the technical competence to generate them. Still, it's difficult to foresee how they'll come together, whose characteristics will matter more or less, what governancemodels or competitive dynamics will drive them, or what new experiences will emerge. Much of Hollywood recognized that the future of television was online when Netflix started its streaming service (IP TV had been deployed in the late 1999s). The issue was timing and how to package such a service (Hollywood required another ten years to realize that all its channels, genres, and content needed to be consolidated into a single app/brand). Many in the media industry are still baffled by the popularity of video game broadcasting and YouTubers and the notion that the best way to commercialize material is to give it out for free and charge $0.99 for optional $0.99 things of no consequence. The acquisition of media conglomerate Time Warner by landline internet behemoth AOL was announced in 2000 to bring media and technology/distribution closer together, but it was abandoned in 2009 after failing to deliver many benefits. Nine years later, it was then purchased under the same premise by AT&T, the mobile internet behemoth. While many technologists anticipated a "personal computer," its attributes and timing were so unpredictably unexpected that Microsoft, rather than IBM, dominated the PC era in the 1990s. While Microsoft anticipated mobile, it misjudged the operating system and hardware role, resulting in the global rise of Android and iOS (and Microsoft's shift from the OS layer to the app/services layer). Similarly, Steve Jobs' computing goals were always "right," but they were established too early and on the wrong device. Email and instant messaging were the two most popular uses of the early Internet, but it wasn't until the late 2000s that the value of social apps/networks was acknowledged. Similarly, all of the conditions for creating Facebook existed before to the year 2000; however, Facebook did not arrive until 2005 - and even then, it was by chance. Many in the technology community have imagined a future state of the Internet, if not a quasi-successor to it, called the "Metaverse," since the late 1970s and early 1980s. It would transform not only the digital world's infrastructure but also much of the physical world, as well as all the platforms and services that sit on top of it, how they work, and what they sell.

You might think, "Wow, okay, so that must be in a sought-after location like Paris or Manhattan," if we told you a 500-square-meter piece of land sold for $2.43 million. Yes, that is correct. When we add in the fact that this plot of land is entirely digital and only exists in the metaverse, the same reaction is likely to be accompanied by layers of skepticism. Who would spend such a large sum of money on something that doesn't exist? Isn't it possible to create an inTnite amount of virtual land? What distinguishes one digital plot from the next?

Sustainability is part of every aspect of our life, with climate concerns shaping the future. Thus, it is important to understand how metaverse will affect sustainability, as it is opening both challenges and opportunities for environmental sustainability. On the one side, replacing real-world interactions with 3D virtual and exchanging physical goods with digital ones are significantly less resource-intensive and more carbon-efficient. Therefore, this holds the promise of reducing the environmental pollution. On the other side, metaverse increases e-waste and energy consumption. Given this controversial impact, it is crucial for businesses and researchers to understand how to ensure that the metaverse develops sustainably. This book is popping out several questions: Do businesses understand the metaverse concept and perceive the benefits and advantages of implementing such technologies? How will the metaverse change business? Will metaverse change our working place and skills needed? How can companies get ahead of the change and mold it to their advantage? Will businesses use metaverse? Can metaverse create a more sustainable word? How can we make the metaverse better than what we have now? Is it going to affect environmental sustainability? Will it cause more severe climate problems, or would it be the solution? How can metaverse impact the achievements of SDGs?

Everybody wants to get on the train as soon as it arrives, so they're scrambling to buy a ticket as soon as possible. Technology, finance, politics, and the social and economic margins of the digital world have not ceased to deliver surprising packages that provide value and novelty, as well as the promise of a future utopian society. The term "cryptocurrency" is no longer a mysterious, esoteric term. A decentralized, autonomous financial system is quickly becoming the norm in almost every part of the world because of the widespread adoption of the idea of a decentralized autonomous financial system. The number of active cryptocurrency transactions and users has grown exponentially over the past few years, and the year 2021/22 was chosen as a significant part of this analysis. Bitcoin's introduction in 2009 has sparked a slew of negative headlines about crypto, ranging from heavy criticism of its working principle to random government jabs to knock it off its feet and out of the global economy to massive crypto meltdowns. Although it has stood the test of time, it continues to grow, and now even children are familiar with the term "cryptocurrency." Cryptocurrency is constantly evolving new ways to use its underlying technology—the blockchain—originally designed for crypto trading. Still, the innovation of NFTs has changed all of that. All these talks about NFTs have you scratching your head and wondering what all the fuss is all about. Astonishing sums of money are being paid for these NFTs in the six-figures and even the eight-figure range! This is not a fairy tale, my dear friends. I'm confident that after reading this e-book, the scales will fall from your eyes, and you will begin to see all the crazy good opportunities that are just out there in the digital world waiting for you to make a move.
