The hazard resulting from the formation of ice on airplanes makes it highly desirable to ascertain all possible meteorological information pertinent thereto in order to avoid or prevent its formation. The object of this paper is to present the results of a number of records recently secured from autographic meteorological infstruments mounted on airplanes at times when ice formed.

Data from flight measurements of the meteorological factors related to the intensity of icing conditions are presented. The physical factors that establish the distribution of liquid water in clouds of various types are discussed and the results of the analysis are used to formulate certain rules for the forecasting of icing intensity. The problems of determining the range of values of the significant factors defining icing intensity for the purpose of the design of ice-protection equipment are discussed and tentative values are given.

Icing Zones In A Warm Front System With General Precipitation written by William Lewis and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1947 with Icing (Meteorology) categories.

Observations of the icing zones present in a warm front cloud system were made during one of a series of flights desgined to investigate the meteorological conditions conductive to the formation of ice on aircraft. While it is realized that it is hazardous to venture general conclusions from observations of a single case, a consistent theoretical interpretation of the observed conditions is believed to justify the conclusion that in large areas of uniform precipitation in the absence of marked orographic effects, the icing zones are limited to the freezing rain area, if any, and a shallow layer of mixed snow and cloud drops just above the freezing level.

Data on the meteorological parameters pertinent to the aircraft icing problem are so summarized as to give the frequency of occurrence of observed icing situations according to two of the parameters. The summarized data indicate that statistical relations exist between some of the parameters. A method, based upon the collection efficiency of an airfoil and the frequency occurrence of icing situations with various liquid-water contents and mean-effective droplet sizes, is proposed for the selection of design criterions for ice-protection equipment. The method provides a convenient means of calculating the percenteage of icing encounters in which the water collection exceeds the design rate.

Ice formation on aircraft can disrupt the smooth flow of air over the wings and prevent the aircraft from taking off or decrease the pilot's ability to maintain control of the aircraft. Despite a variety of technologies designed to prevent ice from forming on planes, as well as persistent efforts by the FAA to mitigate icing risks, icing remains a serious concern. This statement provides info. on: (1) the extent to which large commercial airplanes have experienced accidents and incidents related to icing and contaminated runways; (2) the efforts of FAA to improve safety in icing and winter weather operating conditions; and (3) the challenges that continue to affect aviation safety in icing and winter weather operating conditions. Charts and tables.

The present report examines the problem of ice formation from the point of view of the pilot and the meteorologist. Their experiences prove the ice deposit to be first and foremost a navigational problem and only secondarily a question of de-icing devices. With correct utilization of the meteorological information by the flyer, ice hazard can in many cases be minimized or avoided. Ice formation and the different types of ice deposits are listed and discussed. Weather formation during these ice deposits are also discussed as well as the effect of ice formation on aircraft.
