The thoughts and beliefs of John Wesley and the Early Methodist traditions are frequently related to recent progressive tendencies in theology. There are numerous parallels between contemporary interests in people at the margins and Wesley's concern for poor people and his commitments to the sick and imprisoned. In this volume, contributors from diverse backgrounds in the United States and around the globe reflect on radical and liberation traditions in Methodism in their own context. In conversation with contemporary Methodism and the Wesleyan heritage, each chapter focuses on the question of how radical and liberation traditions provide new visions for the present and future of the church. Contributors: Jose Miguez Bonino, Rebecca S. Chopp, Stephen G. Hatcher, Jione Havea, Theodore Jennings, Jr., Cedric Mayson, Mercy Amba Oduyoye, Andrew Sung Park, Jong Chun Park, Harold J. Recinos, Joerg Rieger, John J. Vincent, and Josiah U. Young, III.

The Independent Methodists have never been a large denomination, and even in the Northwest of England, their heartland, their history is little known. From the beginnings of the movement shortly after the death of John Wesley, the author describes the formative influences in the first half of the nineteenth century ' Methodist, Quaker and Revivalist ' that shaped it, giving it a distinctively lay character unusual in Methodism. The social and political factors that affected its development, such as the Peterloo Massacre, the Beerhouse Act and Chartism are explored. Early Independent Methodist societies often arose from breaches in Wesleyan Methodism over radical politics, and they also differed from the Wesleyans in allowing writing to be taught in Sunday Schools. Other societies came into being through the attraction of a 'free' ministry, particularly in communities where poverty was prevalent; this attracted some dissident Primitive Methodists. In the second half of the nineteenth century, Independent Methodism took on the characteristics of a denomination, with a connexional structure. Dr Dolan examines the involvement of the Independent Methodists in wider society and their contribution to public life. Five Independent Methodists became MPs, while many others held civic office as mayors, aldermen and councillors. For over a hundred years, the denomination has involved itself in the ecumenical movement, climaxing with the decision in 2004 to enter into a covenant partnership with the Baptist Union of Great Britain. Dr Dolan explores many aspects of Independent Methodism, including its theology, which veered between conservative evangelicalism and theological liberalism. He also shows how attitudes towards ministry have changed over 200 years. "For over two centuries Independent Methodists have maintained their distinctive threefold standpoint. John Dolan, one of their number, has written a comprehensive study of the movement. It has entailed tracking down theprimary sources, published and unpublished, for a host of autonomous chapels, many of them extinct, and making a sustained analysis of the developing trends in their corporate life. The task has been pursued with an acute awareness of the changing social and religious climate they inhabited. The resulting account is thorough, persuasive and illuminating. One of the most fascinating pieces in the Evangelical Nonconformist mosaic has now received its due." From the Foreword by Professor David Bebbington

The presence of the (British) Wesleyan Methodist Church is first recorded in the South Pacific when class meetings were initiated near Sydney town late in 1811. From 1815, with the arrival of the first Wesleyan Methodist minister in Sydney, until the mid-1900s, Methodism was carried by lay people and missionaries across Australia and to New Zealand, Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Bougainville and the Solomon Islands. Methodist expansion in the South Pacific was one of history¿s most dynamic waves of Christian mission.During this same period, while missionary efforts were excelling in the South Pacific, European and American Methodists were enjoying a new spirit of prosperity and ease. Methodist academics embraced radical changes to traditional doctrines while traditional disciplines were simultaneously being abandoned in local churches. By the twentieth century Methodism was disoriented and torn by internal conflict¿rendering it incapable of withstanding the pressures of an increasingly industrialised and secularised world. There followed a decline in Methodist potency as catastrophic as its earlier growth had been successful. From 1901 Methodism began to fall behind population growth in Australia and New Zealand until, in 1977, the Methodist Church of Australasia ceased to exist in Australia altogether.Meanwhile an American strand of Methodism, also carrying the name ¿Wesleyan Methodist Church¿, had begun in Melbourne. The (American) Wesleyan Methodist Church was organised in Victoria in 1946 under the leadership of an Australian minister and slowly expanded into other Australian states. By the year 2000 its ministry had stretched to Papua New Guinea, Bougainville, the Solomon Islands and New Zealand. In 2012 the South Pacific Regional Conference of the Wesleyan Methodist Church was formed. This book tells this extraordinary story of Methodism reborn. An overview of the growth and decline of British Methodism provides a backdrop to a detailed, thoroughly researched study of the arrival and expansion of the modern-day Wesleyan Methodist Church in the South Pacific.

This book of essays honors the remarkable career of Larry D. Smith. Known best in wider Wesleyan circles for his remarkable twenty-year career as editor of "God's Revivalist," Dr. Smith has always been first and foremost an educator. Beginning as a high school English and drama teacher with a freshly minted college degree from Kearney State Teachers College in Nebraska (B.A., 1963; M.A., 1965), at the age of 27, Larry became a cofounder of Fletcher Bible College, of which he was later president. After the College closed in 1979, he continued as headmaster of Fletcher Christian Academy until 1994. Dr. Smith's classroom teaching career continued at God's Bible School and College where in addition to editing the "Revivalist" he taught courses in the history of Christianity and Methodism from 1995 to 2015. In the classroom Dr. Smith was noted for a passion for excellence, love of his students, and deep reverence for the pioneering spirit of the saints of church history, for Methodism, and for his own roots in the Free Methodist Church on the Nebraska prairie. These essays focus primarily on the Radical Holiness Movement of which "God's Revivalist" and God's Bible School have been a key center for almost 125 years, and its impact on World Christianity is inestimable.

Methodism started out as a missional alternative to establishment Christianity, but is now like the establishment Christianity it once critiqued. In this book, Dr. Hunter asks whether enough New Testament Christianity exists in any institutional form of Christianity, including The United Methodist Church, to change the world. If United Methodism is to survive, it must recover bold directions in ministry, in addition to Wesley's theological vision. If only it was so simple as to stand on Wesley's shoulders to see our way forward. This means that laity and clergy must be biblically informed, spiritually energized, and systematically organized. If United Methodism is to thrive, it needs to focus on mission, recalling that early Methodism was an extravagant expression of missional Christianity. Net membership decline is not from losing more people but from reaching fewer people than it used to. The need for the gospel of Jesus Christ is greater than ever. United Methodists must create structures and serve God and neighbor in order to spread, as Wesley admonished, scriptural holiness throughout the land. George G. Hunter III is Distinguished Professor of Church Growth and Evangelism at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. He is the author of several books, including Radical Outreach and The Celtic Way of Evangelism, both published by Abingdon Press.

A Vision of United Methodist Life Together. Our world needs love during these desperate days of radical polarization and division. Our United Methodist churches yearn to embrace love more completely because God first loved us. Our “faith” (including doctrine) is important; Christian “hope” (including renewal) is important; “love” of God and neighbor is more important. Multiplying Love underscores what matters most and stands in contrast to divisive misreadings of essential Methodist teachings. Chilcote helps us embrace anew the Wesleyan vision of love of Jesus as central to what we believe and how we live. When I finished Multiplying Love, I found myself jumping up and down shouting, “Yes, yes, yes! Gosh, do we need this!” We are at a remaking moment in the church. Dr. Chilcote beautifully articulates the deeper theological vision that beckons and sustains us. Multiplying Love helped me more thoroughly embrace the kind of loving people we are hoping to become. That’s what it’s all about to me, and this book nails it! —Rev. Christy Allen Holden, co-creator of The Channel UMC, a new hybrid community of faith (@christyallenholden) Every United Methodist pastor would do well to invite their church council to read Paul Chilcote’s brief and powerful Multiplying Love. It recalls the power of the Wesleyan approach to the gospel and makes a compelling case for the future of The United Methodist Church. I loved this book! —Rev. Adam Hamilton, Kansas pastor and author of Wrestling with Doubt, Finding Faith
