Der erste Halbband (Artikel 1-38) befaßt sich mit der Geschichte des Faches Romanistik und der Methodologie (»Das Sprachsystem«), der zweite Halbband (Artikel 39--90) mit den methodologischen Bereichen »Sprache in der Gesellschaft«, »Sprache und Klassifikation«, »Datensammlung und -verarbeitung«. Das Gesamtwerk wird in den kommenden Jahren mit den Indices und dem Literaturverzeichnis (Bd. VIII) abgeschlossen werden.

Language standardization is an ongoing process based on the notions of linguistic correctness and models. This manual contains thirty-six chapters that deal with the theories of linguistic norms and give a comprehensive up-to-date description and analysis of the standardization processes in the Romance languages. The first section presents the essential approaches to the concept of linguistic norm ranging from antiquity to the present, and includes individual chapters on the notion of linguistic norms and correctness in classical grammar and rhetoric, in the Prague School, in the linguistic theory of Eugenio Coseriu, in sociolinguistics as well as in pragmatics, cognitive and discourse linguistics. The second section focuses on the application of these notions with respect to the Romance languages. It examines in detail the normative grammar and the normative dictionary as the reference tools for language codification and modernization of those languages that have a long and well-established written tradition, i.e. Romanian, Italian, French, Catalan, Spanish, and Portuguese. Furthermore, the volume offers a discussion of the key issues regarding the standardization of the ‘minor’ Romance languages as well as Creoles.

Die Monographie untersucht die Herausbildung und Entwicklung der neueren politischen Sprache Spaniens seit der Transición Democrática unter lexikologischem, semantischem und diskursanalytischem Gesichtspunkt. Die Genese sowie der Prozeß der Ausdifferenzierung und Entfaltung des Bedeutungspotentials des zeitgenössischen politischen Wortschatzes, insbesondere die Fixierung und Habitualisierung spezifischer Lesarten, werden vor dem Hintergrund bis ins 19. Jahrhundert zurückreichender Bedeutungs- und Diskurstraditionen freigelegt und nachgezeichnet. Behandelt wird der ideologische Wortschatz der politischen Parteien - die Lexik politischer Ideen, Anschauungen, Einstellungen, Haltungen und Mentalitäten. Desweiteren wird das Augenmerk auf die sozio-ökonomische Lexik mit den ihr eigenen klassifikatorischen und analytischen Bezeichnungskategorien sowie der sich neu konstituierenden administrativen Spezialterminologie gerichtet. Die Studie wendet sich schließlich auch der politischen Metaphorik als einem systematisch verwendeten, analogiebasierten Rekonzeptualisierungsverfahren zu, das den Hintergrund für die Ausprägung kohärenter politischer Diskurse abgibt, aber insbesondere auch den Kristallisationsraum für die similaritätsbasierte Lexikogenese. Der dreifache Zugriff läßt im diskursgeschichtlichen Längsschnitt den besonderen Charakter der politischen Sprache des Landes, besonders ihren stark pseudo-philosophischen, dezidiert technokratischen und nicht zuletzt auch euphemistischen Zug verständlich werden. Tabus sind Ausdruck des kulturellen Entwicklungsstandes und Selbstverständnisses einer Gesellschaft und reflektieren somit deren Mentalität und Wahrnehmung der Realität. Speziell sprachliche Tabus sind über Euphemismen greifbar, die eine optimale Grundlage für entsprechende Interpretationen darstellen. Auf diesem Hintergrund gilt der Band französischen und italienischen Euphemismen, wie sie entsprechend dem Sprachverständnis der Lexikographen zweier maßgebender Wörterbücher als solche ausgewiesen sind und sich bei umsichtiger Auswertung besonders gut für kulturvergleichende Betrachtungen eignen. Ausgehend von einer quantitativen und qualitativen Klassifizierung in Bezug auf formale und semantische Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede werden die Euphemismen in ihrer Raison d'être kultur- und mentalitätshistorisch erklärt und motivgeschichtlich in Bereichen verankert, die vom Magisch-Religiösen über das Ethisch-Ästhetische und Politisch-Korrekte bis hin zur „Ethik ohne Moral“ reichen.
