Children have participated in the design of technologies intended to be used by children with varying degrees of involvement, using diverse methods, and in differing contexts. This participation can be characterized as involving children as users, testers, informants, or design partners. It is only relatively recent that researchers around the world have begun to work more substantively with children to design technologies for children. This monograph synthesizes prior work involving children as informants and design partners, and describes the emergence of participatory design methods and techniques for children. We consider the various roles children have played in the design process, with a focus on those that integrally involve children throughout the process. We summarize and provide a pragmatic foundation for fellow researchers and practitioners to use several methods and techniques for designing technologies with and for children. In this monograph we relate the techniques to the design goals they help fulfill. The monograph concludes with a consideration of working with children in technology design processes as we move into the twenty-first century.

Developing New Technologies For Young Children written by John Siraj-Blatchford and has been published by Stylus Publishing, LLC. this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2004 with Education categories.

Describing recent work on developing new educational tools for four to eight year olds, this text is funded by the European Commission. Children of this age learn quickly, as they have few pre-conceptions and are curious and open to new ideas and experiences. But young children have their own forms of communication and expression and the developers and designers of these learning technologies have to create more intuitive and accessible products than if they were for older children and adults. The research and development indicates what can be done and the book points a way forward. The research, carried out over three years was multi-disciplinary and involved ten collaborative research and development projects along with two supporting "working groups". This book describes the lessons learnt in the process of developing each distinctive product and considers the cognitive and effective development of young children pertinent to the development of appropriate technology. This book should be of interest to specialists and more general readers concerned with young children and technology. It provides a resource for all involved in researching the use of existing early childhood technology or embarking upon the development of new products.

Children experience technology in both formal and informal settings as they grow and develop. Despite research indicating the benefits of technology in early childhood education, the gap between parents, teachers, and children continues to grow as our new generation of children enters early childhood classrooms. Child Development and the Use of Technology: Perspectives, Applications and Experiences addresses major issues regarding technology for young children, providing a holistic portrait of technology and early childhood education from the views of practitioners in early childhood education, instructional design technology, special education, and mathematics and science education. Consisting of fifteen chapters developed by multidisciplinary teams, this book includes information, advice, and resources from practitioners, professionals, and university faculty engaged in early childhood education and instructional design technology.
