This volume collects essays by the late bioethicist John D. Arras, best known for his many contributions to the methodology of bioethics. Always open-minded, Arras did not favor a single theory or view of method in bioethics, eschewing labels such as "casuist" or "pragmatist." He was conversant with the main philosophical methods that have dominated bioethics since the field's origin, including principlism, Gert's common morality, the "new casuistry", pragmatism, and others. Rather than defending any particular theory or method, though, Arras rigorously investigated those methods - and how they both expand and limit our field of vision. He sought, in the tradition of Kierkegaard, to make life "harder" for bioethics, by uncovering challenges to the field's analytical methods. His favorite mode of exploration and expression was the thoughtful essay. This is the first book in bioethics that explains how it is that you actually go about doing good bioethics. Bioethics has made a mistake about its methods, and this has led not only to too much theorizing, but also fragmentation within bioethics. A volume on religious/theological methods in biomedical ethics inevitably of whether the methodological dimension can be distin raises the question guished from the various other things that go on in ethical discourse. It is difficult to answer this question definitively since many elements in moral conversation can be interpreted in different ways. Barbara Hilkert Andolsen illustrates this issue in this volume when she defines one of her crucial cate gories, gender justice, as being both procedural and substantive/normative. This difficulty of finally separating the methodological from the normative arises in many areas of contemporary ethical writing, both feminist and otherwise. Nevertheless, it seems that in many cases we can separate out the method ological issues with considerable precision. Albert Jonsen and James Childress achieve just such a sharp focus in their essays. This does not mean that a careful dissecting of their papers would not reveal normative elements lurking about their methodological points. It is simply to say that the issues they analyze and the positions they take are, at least prima facie, overwhelmingly method ological. They are much more about how we think about ethical matters than they are about what we think about them.

CHRISTOPH REHMANN-SUTTER, MARCUS DÜWELL, DIETMAR MIETH When we placed “finitude”, “limits of human existence” as a motto over a round of discussion on biomedicine and bioethics (which led to this collection of essays) we did not know how far this would lead us into methodological quandaries. However, we felt intuitively that an interdisciplinary approach including social and cultural sciences would have an advantage over a solely disciplinary (philosophical or theological) analysis. Bioethics, if it is to have adequate discriminatory power, should include sensitivity to the cultural contexts of biomedicine, and also to the cultural contexts of bioethics itself. Context awareness, of course, is not foreign to philosophical or theological bioethics, for the simple reason that the issues tackled in the debates (as in other fields of ethics) could not be adequately understood outside their contexts. Moral issues are always accompanied by contexts. When we try to unpack them – which is necessary to make them accessible to ethical discussion – we are regularly confronted with the fact that in removing too much of the context we do not clarify an issue, but make it less comprehensible. The context – at least some essential parts of it – is intrinsic to the issue. Unpacking in ethics is therefore a different procedure. It does not mean peeling the context off, but rather identifying which contextual elements are essential for an understanding of the key moral aspects of the issue, and explaining how they establish its particular character.
