Meshless, or meshfree methods, which overcome many of the limitations of the finite element method, have achieved significant progress in numerical computations of a wide range of engineering problems. A comprehensive introduction to meshless methods, Meshless Methods and Their Numerical Properties gives complete mathematical formulations for the most important and classical methods, as well as several methods recently developed by the authors. This book also offers a rigorous mathematical treatment of their numerical properties—including consistency, convergence, stability, and adaptivity—to help you choose the method that is best suited for your needs. Get Guidance for Developing and Testing Meshless Methods Developing a broad framework to study the numerical computational characteristics of meshless methods, the book presents consistency, convergence, stability, and adaptive analyses to offer guidance for developing and testing a particular meshless method. The authors demonstrate the numerical properties by solving several differential equations, which offer a clearer understanding of the concepts. They also explain the difference between the finite element and meshless methods. Explore Engineering Applications of Meshless Methods The book examines how meshless methods can be used to solve complex engineering problems with lower computational cost, higher accuracy, easier construction of higher-order shape functions, and easier handling of large deformation and nonlinear problems. The numerical examples include engineering problems such as the CAD design of MEMS devices, nonlinear fluid-structure analysis of near-bed submarine pipelines, and two-dimensional multiphysics simulation of pH-sensitive hydrogels. Appendices supply useful template functions, flowcharts, and data structures to assist you in implementing meshless methods. Choose the Best Method for a Particular Problem Providing insight into the special features and intricacies of meshless methods, this is a valuable reference for anyone developing new high-performance numerical methods or working on the modelling and simulation of practical engineering problems. It guides you in comparing and verifying meshless methods so that you can more confidently select the best method to solve a particular problem.

Containing the latest in a long line of conferences covering the most recent advances in Boundary Elements and Mesh Reduction Methods (BEM/MRM), this book contains an important chapter in the history of this important method used in science and engineering. The BEM/MRM conference has long been recognised as THE international forum on the technique. The proceedings of the conference therefore constitute a record of the development of the method, running from the initial successful development of boundary integral techniques into the BEM, a method that eliminates the need for an internal mesh, to the recent and most sophisticated Mesh Reduction and even Meshless Methods. Since the boundary elements, mesh reduction, and meshless methods are used in many engineering and scientific fields, the book will be of great interest to all engineers and scientists working within the areas of numerical analysis, boundary elements and meshless methods. Topics covered include: Advanced formulations; Advanced meshless and mesh reduction methods; Structural mechanics applications; Solid mechanics; Heat and mass transfer, Electrical engineering and electromagnetics; Computational methods; Fluid flow modelling; Damage mechanics and fracture; Dynamics and Vibrations Engineering applications.

When students once master the concepts of the finite element method (and meshing), it's not long before they begin to look at other numerical techniques and applications, especially the boundary element and meshless methods (since a mesh is not required). The expert authors of this book provide a simple explanation of these three powerful numerical schemes and show how they all fall under the umbrella of the more universal method of weighted residuals. The book is structured in four sections. The first introductory section provides the method of weighted residuals development of finite differences, finite volume, finite element, boundary element, and meshless methods along with 1D examples of each method. The following three sections of the book present a more detailed development of the finite element method, then progress through the boundary element method, and end with meshless methods. Each section serves as a stand-alone description, but it is apparent how each conveniently leads to the other techniques. It is recommended that the reader begin with the finite element method, as this serves as the primary basis for defining the method of weighted residuals. Computer files in both MathCad and MATLAB are available from the fbm.centecorp.com website, along with example data files.

This book contains papers presented at the Thirty Fourth International Conference on Boundary Elements and other Mesh Reduction Methods (BEM/MRM), recognised as the international forum for the latest advances of these methods and their applications in science and engineering. The success of the meeting, since the first conference took place in Southampton, UK, in 1978, is an indication of the strength of the research being carried out by many different groups around the world. This continuous growth is a result of the evolution of the techniques from methods based on classical integral equations to techniques now covering a wide variety of mathematical approaches, the main objective of which is to reduce or eliminate the mesh. The mesh, a concept inherited from more primitive methods, such as finite differences and finite elements, is alien to the solution of the problem and dictated only by the limitations of first generation analysis techniques. Topics covered include: Advanced meshless and mesh reduction methods, Electrical engineering and electromagnetics, Fluid flow, Heat and mass transfer, Advanced structural applications, Dynamics and vibrations, Damage mechanics and fracture, Material characterisation, Advanced formulations, Computational techniques, Stochastic modelling, Emerging applications.

There have been substantial developments in meshfree methods, particle methods, and generalized finite element methods since the mid 1990s. The growing interest in these methods is in part due to the fact that they offer extremely flexible numerical tools and can be interpreted in a number of ways. For instance, meshfree methods can be viewed as a natural extension of classical finite element and finite difference methods to scattered node configurations with no fixed connectivity. Furthermore, meshfree methods have a number of advantageous features that are especially attractive when dealing with multiscale phenomena: A-priori knowledge about the solution’s particular local behavior can easily be introduced into the meshfree approximation space, and coarse scale approximations can be seamlessly refined by adding fine scale information. However, the implementation of meshfree methods and their parallelization also requires special attention, for instance with respect to numerical integration.

Written by two well-respected experts in the field, The Finite Element Method for Boundary Value Problems: Mathematics and Computations bridges the gap between applied mathematics and application-oriented computational studies using FEM. Mathematically rigorous, the FEM is presented as a method of approximation for differential operators that are mathematically classified as self-adjoint, non-self-adjoint, and non-linear, thus addressing totality of all BVPs in various areas of engineering, applied mathematics, and physical sciences. These classes of operators are utilized in various methods of approximation: Galerkin method, Petrov-Galerkin Method, weighted residual method, Galerkin method with weak form, least squares method based on residual functional, etc. to establish unconditionally stable finite element computational processes using calculus of variations. Readers are able to grasp the mathematical foundation of finite element method as well as its versatility of applications. h-, p-, and k-versions of finite element method, hierarchical approximations, convergence, error estimation, error computation, and adaptivity are additional significant aspects of this book.

Traditional FEM and the more recent BEM underlie many engineering computational methods and corresponding software. Both methods have their merits and also their limitations. The combination of both methods will provide an improved numerical tool in the future. The aim of this book is to present significant basic formulations of FEM and BEM and to show their common practical and mathematical foundations, their differences and possibilities for their combination. These include variational foundations, FEM and BEM for linear and non-linear elasticity and potential problems, the combination of FEM-BEM asymptotic error analysis, modifications due to corner and crack singularities and corresponding improvement of convergence, plastic analysis, numerical algorithms and engineering applications.
