I have been teaching courses on experimental techniques in nuclear and particle physics to master students in physics and in engineering for many years. This book grew out of the lecture notes I made for these students. The physics and engineering students have rather different expectations of what such a course should be like. I hope that I have nevertheless managed to write a book that can satisfy the needs of these different target audiences. The lectures themselves, of course, need to be adapted to the needs of each group of students. An engineering student will not qu- tion a statement like “the velocity of the electrons in atoms is ?1% of the velocity of light”, a physics student will. Regarding units, I have written factors h and c explicitly in all equations throughout the book. For physics students it would be preferable to use the convention that is common in physics and omit these constants in the equations, but that would probably be confusing for the engineering students. Physics students tend to be more interested in theoretical physics courses. However, physics is an experimental science and physics students should und- stand how experiments work, and be able to make experiments work. This is an open access book.

All solids are composed of atoms or molecules and in order to explain their behavior, experiments and theories came forward. This book is meant to be a practical introduction into the use of probability and statistics in experimental physics for advanced undergraduate students and for graduate students. I have attempted to write a short book. It is not intended as a comprehensive text in probability and statistics. I have tried to emphasize areas I have found to be useful when doing experimental physics. Except for the first two chapters the emphasis is on applications and understanding. I have omitted proofs of formal theorems in the interests of brevity unless I felt the proof added to one's intuition in understanding and applying the theorem. Since, however, this is a field in which there are often a number of misunderstandings, it is necessary to state some things with reasonable precision. I have tried to do this when necessary. I assume the student is familiar with partial derivatives and with ele mentary matrix manipulation. A computer is a needed tool for probability and statistics in experimental physics. We will introduce its use in this subject in some of the homework problems. One may interact with a computer in a batch mode or an inter active mode. In a batch mode, one submits FORTRAN or other language programs, the computer processes them, and returns the end results. In the interactive mode, one gives the computer an instruction, the computer processes it, indicates what it has done, and waits for the next instruction.

Not quite six years have passed since the appearance of the first edition of this book. This is not a long period. Yet the rapid pace of scientific and technological development today is such that any book on experimental technique must be wary of becoming ob solete in some way or another even in such a short span of time. Thus, when the publisher Springer-Verlag informed me of the need for a new printing of this book, I decided it was an opportune moment to update some of the chapters as well as to include some new material. The result is this second edition. The most notable changes have been in Chapters 2 and 3. In the latter, which con cerns radiation protection, most of the sections have been rewritten to take into account the new recommendations from the International Commission on Radiation Protection, the most important of which are the new dose limits for exposure to ionizing radiation. In addition, emphasis has now been put on the use of SI units in dosimetry, i.e., the Gray and Sievert, which have now become standard.
