Methods of Treatment of Unstable Ground focuses on the methods of treatment that have been adopted by engineers in their attempts to make unstable ground usable. These methods are meant to stabilize ground, either temporarily as in ground-water lowering or freezing techniques, or permanently as in grouting. This book is comprised of 11 chapters. The first of which reviews some of the modern techniques in addressing problems caused by unstable ground, including those caused by water in excavations, instability of natural or excavated slopes, the settlement of structures on soft or loose soils, and subsidence due to extraction of minerals from the ground. These techniques range from ground-water lowering to the use of an impermeable barrier around the excavation to prevent inflow and at the same time maintain the surrounding water table at its normal level. Attention then turns to the use of electro-osmosis and electrochemical stabilization in ground engineering; control of groundwater by excluding it through grouting; and fundamental conditions governing the penetration of grouts. The remaining chapters explore grout selection based on engineering performance; ground conditions in mining areas; clay grouting and alluvial grouting; and ground freezing. Finally, the use of cement to stabilize soil and of vibroflotation to improve poor ground below foundations of structures is described. This book should prove useful to engineers engaged in ground engineering.

Foundation Engineering in Difficult Ground discusses the different principles and practices involved in the building of foundations in different soil types, especially on difficult ground. The book covers topics such as the classification of soil; silts, loess, and tills; the mechanical behavior of rocks; and the engineering aspects of rock weathering, engineering classification of rock masses, and the engineering performance of rocks. Also covered in the book are topics such as models for the mechanical behaviour of soil; computer predictions in difficult soil conditions; foundations on rock, settlement foundations, and the relation of earth movement on foundations; ground treatment; and the appraisal of stability conditions in different soil conditions. The text is recommended for engineers who are in need of a guide in the establishment of foundations in different soil conditions, especially those in difficult ones.

Engineering Geology and Geotechnics discusses engineering survey methods. The book is comprised of 12 chapters that cover several concerns in engineering, such as building foundations, slopes, and construction materials. Chapter 1 covers site investigation, while Chapter 2 tackles geophysical exploration. Chapter 3 deals with slope and open excavation, while Chapter 4 discusses subsurface excavation. Foundation for buildings, reservoir, and dams and dam sites are also covered in the book. A chapter then tackles hydrogeology and underground water supply. The text also encompasses river and beach engineering. The last two chapters cover engineering seismology and construction materials. This book will be of great use to researchers, practitioners, and students of engineering.

This book provides a review of problems during design and construction on problematic soils. Design methods, site investigation, construction and analysis of the various improvement methods available are explained and discussed. Various regions may have different soils with geotechnical problems that differ from those faced in other regions. For example, in Southeast Asia, the common geotechnical problems are those associated with construction on soft clays and organic soils, while in the arid region of the Middle East, problems are generally associated with the desert soils. In the US, the problems are associated with organic soils, expansive and collapsing soils, and shale. Laterite and lateritic soils are especially problematic in Mexico. Similarly, in Europe, for example, the geotechnical problems are associated with loess (France), and organic soil (Germany). A detailed description of various methods of ground improvement has been provided in 11 chapters. Each chapter deals not only with a description of the method but also focuses on region-specific ground problems and suitable ground improvement techniques. Case studies have also been included. One general chapter is dedicated to site investigation, instrumentation, assessment and control. This book will be of value to students and professionals in the fields of civil and geotechnical engineering, as well as to soil scientists and engineering geologists.
