Metropolitan areas concentrate the main share of population, production and consumption in OECD countries. They are likely to be one of the most important units for economic, social and environmental analysis as well as for the development of policy strategies. However, one of the main problems that occur when adopting metropolitan areas as units of analysis and policy in European countries is the absence of widely accepted standards for identifying them. This severe problem hinders comparative research between European countries using metropolitan areas as units of analysis. In this text we defend the necessity of a methodology to identify metropolitan areas in Europe. This methodology should fulfil three requisites: first, to be useful for analysis and planning, which requires to represent in a realistic way economic, social and environmental phenomena; second, to be applicable to all the European countries; and third, to be flexible enough to deal with the existence of different administrative and territorial structures across countries as well as to take into account that many metropolitan areas, particularly the largest ones, are polycentric. The aim of this paper is to identify metropolitan areas in Spain and Italy using similar methodologies and to evaluate their application to other European countries. The results allow comparing the metropolitan realities of these countries as well as providing the metropolitan units that can be used in subsequent comparative researches. Two methodologies are proposed: the Cheshire-GEMACA methodology (FUR) and an iterative version of the USA-MSA algorithm, particularly adapted to deal with polycentric metropolitan areas. Both methods show a good approximation to the metropolitan reality and produce very similar results: 75 FUR and 67 DMA in Spain (75% of total population and employment), and 81 FUR and 86 DMA in Italy (70% of total population and employment).

The objective of the article was to re-define the bipolar metropolitan area within the Kujawsko-Pomorskie region (NUTS 2). Concentration of metropolitan features, as well as socio-economic situations of its communes (NUTS 5) in 2011, and also their development in the period 2009-2011 were examined. Bydgoszcz and Toruń, the economically strongest cities in the region, were established as the dual core of the metropolitan area. The determined metropolitan area will cover the most developed communes which meet the following criteria: neighbourhood, continuity, compactness, maximum distance and population. The development levels of communes were determined using taxonomic development measure. Its values were calculated considering the economic and also social aspects of regional development, as well as features typical of metropolitan areas, such as: well-developed sectors of R&D, knowledgebased economy and serving superior services. The metropolitan area resulted from the research slightly differs from the Bydgoszcz−Toruń Metropolitan Area (appointed in 2005) and composed all of the communes located within the Bydgoski and Toruński districts (NUTS 4). Chełmża and Koronowo, the less developed communes of the districts, were excluded from the new metropolitan area. The neighbouring communes of Ciechocinek, Nakło and Unisław were included in the BipOM due to their significant level of regional development. The Inowrocław district is a prospective candidate to join the BipOM.

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled China''s Extended Metropolitan Regions: Formation and Delimitation Submitted by ZHENG Yanting for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in October 2007 Almost 20 years have passed since the first investigation on regional in situ economic development, i.e. extended metropolitan region (EMR) formation was published. Most of the related studies focused on the functional features of the EMR, either on its economic transformation as a whole, or its feature of urban and rural mixture, which has often led to confusing with the concepts of megalopolis, desakota, or a cluster of cities. Setting out from a spatial perspective, this study has provided an alternative definition for the EMR concept: the EMR is distinctively a dispersed regional concentration with the involvement of the ''remote rural areas'' into in situ industrialization as a response to globalization. Under this new and more restricted definition, traditional metropolitan growth is not considered as aspects of EMR formation. Additionally, the continuously dispersed feature distinguishes the EMR from the polycentric city region in the DCs. Using national demographic data by county in China, we have tested our hypothetical framework. Through the examination of the regional concentration tendency (based on population and migration dynamics) and region-based urban transition (based on non-agricultural transformation in terms of employment, and underestimation of urbanization), we find that there is a dispersed regional concentration in three urban regions in China, i.e. Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan, the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and the Pearl River Delta (PRD). Using China''s matured EMRs, the PRD and the YRD as cases, temporal and spatial analyses based on county-level demographic, economic and land use data have been conducted to further verify our hypothetical spatial pattern of the EMR. We find that there is centripetal concentration in the EMRs in 1990-2000, which can be indicated both by population/net migration and by non-agricultural transformation of land use. This spatial tendency is found to be consistent temporally and spatially with their integration with globalization, and rapid economic growth and restructuring of their spatial units. Consequently, the spatial units within the EMRs have become wealthier and more non-agricultural in character, which have acted as a global platform as a whole, than the outside counties within the same province. Moreover, the designated rural areas within the PRD have also displayed regional concentration of population and migration, in situ economic development and restructuring, and global features more dramatically than those in the outside counties in the same province. Together with the land use dispersion index, the feature of regional continuously dispersed in situ development of the EMR has been verified. Multiple regression analyses suggest that the spatial pattern of concentration and dispersion is shaped both by global forces, in terms of foreign direct investment (FDI) inflow, and by local forces, such as the roles of industrialization, population density as shown in land use dispersion and urbanization in population concentration. The in situ economic transformation in the ''remote rural areas'' is mainly owing to both dramatic concentration and economic development of the EMR. In a word, the EMR is shaped by bo

Metropolitan Problems is the end-product of one of the most dynamic research programmes of its kind ever conceived and executed. The book, which took three years to complete, represents the culmination of a two year study that was highlighted by a conference held in toronto in 1967. In the early 1960s, the bureau of Municipal Research (in metropolitan Toronto) decided that a significant way for it to celebrate Canada's centennial would be to initiate a systematic international study of the world's metropolitan areas. The study, with the official cooperation of the United Nations, was designed to produce positive insights into the methods of coping with the interlocking sets of problems associated with the expansion of the modern metropolis. Twelve papers on various aspects of metropolitan problems were commissioned from an international body of experts. Working with these experts were study groups drawn from forty major metropolitan centres throughout the world. After making exhaustive studies of their respective urban centres, the groups reported their findings and submitted detailed briefs through their representatives at the conference. Throughout the symposium, a conscious effort was made to examine single aspects of social, economic and physical change within the overall perspective of the metropolis. The book reflects this approach. Each chapter directs attention to specific problems of the metropolis, problems resulting from the contradiction between accelerating technology and our ability to cope with the incredible pace and rate of change. Together they prove that, despite differences in technology, culture, and political and social matters, the major urban areas of the world do have much in common. Emerging tendencies can be analysed and corrective and preventative measures be made through comparative analysis. This book was first published in 1970.
