In der DDR erfreuten sich Sachbücher für Kinder und Jugendliche großer Beliebtheit. Zwischen 1949 und 1989 sind mehr als 3.000 Titel erschienen. Sie sind kaum erforscht. Themen, Formen, Strukturen und die Besonderheit ihrer Illustrationen werden in diesem Sammelband erstmals genauer analysiert. In den Fokus rücken Themen wie Umwelterziehung und literarische Reisen sowie Gattungen wie Sachbilderbuch, deskriptives Bilderbuch, Sprachspielbuch und Kinderlexikon. Wissen vermittelnde fiktionale Literatur wie das MOSAIK und Geschichtserzählungen von Gerda Rottschalk werden ebenso exemplarisch untersucht wie Erzählstoffe für den Unterricht. Die Besonderheit von Sachbuchillustrationen wird analysiert und das grafische Werk von Gerhard Preuß für Kinder erstmals vorgestellt. Children's and adolescents' books were hugely popular in the German Democratic Republic. Between 1949 and 1989, more than 3,000 books were published. They have scarcely been researched. The themes, forms, structures and the distinctiveness of their illustrations are analysed in this anthology in greater detail for the first time ever. It focuses on topics such as environmental education and literary journeys, as well as genres such as non-fiction illustrated books, descriptive picture books, word-play books and children's encyclopaedias. Factual knowledge-imparting fiction literature, such as the MOSAIK and Gerda Rottschalk's stories, is also examined as exemplary narrative lesson material, whilst the distinctiveness of non-fictional illustrated books is analysed. Furthermore, Gerhard Preuss's graphic work for children is introduced for the first time ever.

In zahlreichen Gesprächen mit in-und ausländischen Benutzern unserer DDR-Sammlungen, in vielen schriftlichen Anfragen an den Arbeitsbereich DDR-Forschung und -Archiv unseres Zentral instituts sowie auf wissenschaftlichen Tagungen wurde seit langem immer erneut gefragt, warum es keine umfassende systematische Bibliographie zur politischen und sozialen Entwicklung der SBZ/DDR gäbe, die in relativer Dichte der dargebotenen Titel den gesamten Zeitraum seit 1945 um faßt und zugleich diese Entwicklungen in die allgemeine Zeitgeschichte, in die Deutschlandpolitik der Siegermächte und der beiden deutschen Staaten sowie in die außenpolitischen Rahmenbedin gungen einbettet. Dabei wurde vielfach der Wunsch geäußert, daß sich unser Arbeitsbereich selbst dieser Aufgabe unterziehen möge. In der Tat waren im deutschen Sprachraum seit der von Günter Fischbach im Büro Bonner Be richte bearbeiteten Veröffentlichung Literatur zur deutschen Frage. Bibliographische Hinweise auf neuere Veröffentlichungen aus dem In-und Ausland, hrsg. v. Bundesministerium für gesamtdeut sche Fragen, Bonn und Berlin (1. Aufl. Bonn 1958 mit rd. 1 600 Titeln, 4. überarb. u. erw. Aufl. 1966 mit über 2800 Titeln) längere Zeit keine umfassenden bibliographischen Hilfsmittel mehr erschie nen. 1975 konnte dann die von Marie-Luise Goldbach u. a. erarbeitete Bibliographie zur Deutsch landpolitik 1941-1971 (Dokumente zur Deutschlandpolitik, Beihefte Bd. 1; wissenschaft/. Leitg. : Karl Dietrich Bracher und Hans-Adolt Jacobsen), hrsg. v. Bundesministerium für innerdeutsche Beziehungen, Frankfurt a. M. 1975, vorgelegt werden, die über 3 200 Publikationen nachweist. Mit der von Karsten Schröder bearbeiteten, über 3000 Titel umfassenden Bibliographie zur Deutsch landpolitik 1975-1982 (Dokumente zur Deutschlandpolitik, Beihefte Bd. 6; wissenschaftl. Leitg.

MURIEL MCCARTHY This volume originated from a seminar organised by Richard H. Popkin in Marsh's Library on July 7-8, 1994. It was one of the most stimulating events held in the Library in recent years. Although we have hosted many special seminars on such subjects as rare books, the Huguenots, and Irish church history, this was the first time that a seminar was held which was specifically related to the books in our own collection. It seems surprising that this type of seminar has never been held before although the reason is obvious. Since there is no printed catalogue of the Library scholars are not aware of its contents. In fact the collection of books by late seventeenth and early eighteenth century European authors on, for example, such subjects as biblical criticism, political and religious controversy, is one of the richest parts of the Library's collections. Some years ago we were informed that of the 25,000 books in Marsh's at least 5,000 English books or books printed in England were printed between 1640 and 1700.
