In questo romanzo si intrecciano due storie, una contemporanea, il cui protagonista è Giaco, uno studente universitario sognatore e squattrinato che vive a Genova, e una ambientata nel passato, che si svolge prevalentemente nell’Argentina del primo Novecento, il cui protagonista si chiama Cesco, bisnonno di Giaco. Il ragazzo riesce a dar vita ad una relazione virtuale con una coetanea giapponese, nata via internet di fronte allo schermo di un computer, iniziando un rapporto a distanza che si trasforma con il passar del tempo in qualcosa di concreto, tanto da convincere i due ragazzi ad incontrarsi sul serio. Giaco vola in Giappone e ne nasce una vera storia d’amore che sembra reggere pur scontando il problema delle distanze. Tuttavia tutto finisce in seguito alle conseguenze dello sconvolgente tsunami abbattutosi sulla costa orientale giapponese l’11 marzo 2011, evento vissuto da Giaco in prima persona. Tornato in Italia, il giovane riprende a vivere, faticando a cancellare dalla mente il ricordo traumatico dell'avventura giapponese, filtrando le nuove esperienze di vita attraverso il ricordo della tragedia vissuta e di quell’amore perduto, finché non scopre casualmente un plico di vecchie lettere sepolte in soffitta, grazie alla quali giunge a conoscenza delle esperienze del proprio bisnonno, narrate fino a quel momento all’interno del romanzo parallelamente alla storia contemporanea. Le due vicende finiscono per intrecciarsi fra loro nel momento in cui le lettere rivelano a Giaco l’esistenza di un’intensa storia d'amore che Cesco aveva vissuto durante gli trascorsi in Argentina, una storia cui il giovane di oggi si appassiona molto. Le analogie tra la storia del bisnipote contemporaneo e del bisnonno vissuto cent’anni fa non mancano, ma la grande differenza risiede proprio nei mezzi di comunicazione, che oggi forse ci rendono più superficiali, ma che ci permettono di mantenere vivi dei contatti in modo un tempo impensabile.
