Excerpt from Michael Heilprin and His Sons a Biography Shortly after the death of Michael Heilprin, in 1888, I planned, with the cordial appoval of Mr. W. P. Garrison, then editor of the New York Nation, to collect into a volume some of the articles contributed to that journal by Mr. Heilprin. The plan was not carried out, and fate has decreed that I should now, in writing of the father, commemorate also the lives of his sons, Louis and Angelo. Time, I am convinced, has detracted nothing from the value of what, in this volume, has been included from the contributions of Michael Heilprin to the columns of the Nation and the Evening Post. The proprietors of these journals have kindly permitted the full use of their files. I acknowledge also, with thanks, the permission given me by Messrs. D. Appleton & Co. to reprint extracts from the "American Cyclopedia," the "Historical Reference Book," " Alaska and the Klondike," and from Appleton's Popular Science Monthly; and by J. B. Lippincott Co. to quote certain passages from "Mont Pelee and the Tragedy of Martinique." I am under similar obligations to Messrs. G. P. Putnam's Sons for permission to reprint the article on "The Geographical Conquests of the Century " (published by them in their volume on " The Century's Progress," by arrangement with the proprietors of the Evening Post); and to the publishers of The Forum and The Engineering Magazine for the use of the articles quoted from these periodicals in this book. The Kidnapped And The Ransomed written by Kate E. R. Pickard and has been published by U of Nebraska Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995-01-01 with Social Science categories.

Originally published in 1856, The Kidnapped and the Ransomed is the personal recollection of Peter Still, a black slave. He was stolen as a child from his home in New Jersey, yoked to servitude for more than forty years in Kentucky and Alabama, and finally freed with the help of a pair of Jewish brothers. It is the only nineteenth-century slave narrative to show the participation of the Jews in the antislavery movement before the Civil War. The reader follows Still through a succession of brutal masters, a clandestine courtship, marriage involving separation, births and deaths, the formation of a daring plan for freedom, and harrowing action. No stage drama could be as wrenching as this true rendering of a slave's experience in America. Kate E. R. Pickard was in contact with Still while she taught at the Female Seminary in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Maxwell Whiteman was the archival and historical consultant for the Union League of Philadelphia and coauthor, with Edwin Wolf II, of The History of the Jews of Philadelphia from Colonial Times to the Age of Jackson. The original introduction by Rev. Samuel J. May, an abolitionist, has been retained.

New York Jews, so visible and integral to the culture, economy and politics of America's greatest city, has eluded the grasp of historians for decades. Surprisingly, no comprehensive history of New York Jews has ever been written. City of Promises: The History of the Jews in New York, a three volume set of original research, pioneers a path-breaking interpretation of a Jewish urban community at once the largest in Jewish history and most important in the modern world.

The Civil War, a watershed event in American history, marked a climactic moment in the history of New York’s Jewish community. Jews served and died on the battlefield, attended to wounded soldiers, sewed uniforms for soldiers and mourned the death of their President with as much depth as the Christian population. Never had American citizenship felt more compatible with Jewish identity, and never were the rewards of a newfound industrialized American prosperity more within reach. Howard Rock tells the tale of this important era in Jewish history, which would transform New York City Jews into the largest Jewish community in the world.
