M. de Maubrun liked Paris: a royal and majestic city which, nevertheless, the Republic had used wisely. Surely the first city of the world! The marquis knew that he was chauvinistic. There was nothing he could do about it. The more the twentieth century pushed France into the row of little nations, the prouder he was to be a Frenchman. He went calmly to revisit the Louvre, Versailles, Notre-Dame, Saint-Denis -- and then he felt better. Paris in July -- bright, spacious, brilliant with leaves and blue days -- was reassuring to him. The new merchandise he saw in the large store windows seemed worthy of these old stones. In the streets he contemplated women of a beauty not to be found in any other corner of the world.

Between Rome And Rebellion written by Yves Chiron and has been published by Angelico Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2024-06-15 with Religion categories.

With Between Rome and Rebellion, Yves Chiron, acclaimed author of dozens of biographies and historical studies, once again proves himself a master historian. Drawing upon a vast fund of information gathered over the course of three decades, including numerous interviews, correspondence, diaries, and archives, Chiron tells the thrilling, at times gut-wrenching, story of the “loyal resistance” of Catholics—especially in France, but soon all over the world—who held fast to the old forms of worship, catechesis, doctrine, and family life, in the midst of a Church roiling with reforms that they viewed as betrayals. Starting with the Modernist crisis and Pius X’s response to it, we follow in these pages the immense drama of a century filled with battles on every front—political, military, and ecclesiastical. We learn of the vitality, but also the fissiparousness, of traditionalist groups at a time when nearly everything else in the Church seemed to be falling apart, especially after the tumultuous years of the Second Vatican Council. We see the rage directed at traditionalists by an establishment that tolerates any experiment except “the experiment of Tradition” and writes off all adherence to the past as “integrism.” As everyone tries to navigate the turbulent waters of a conciliar “renewal” that quickly turned into a debacle, we become acquainted with modern-day confessors and white martyrs, wild-eyed prophets and sober critics, two-faced churchmen and secret allies. Chiron’s deft pen brings many controversial figures into sharp relief—above all, Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, founder of the Priestly Society of St. Pius X, with whose formidable witness everyone, friend or foe, had to reckon. Breathlessly moving from one disaster and rescue operation to the next, Between Rome and Rebellion sheds new light on the modern transformation of the Catholic Church, and why numerous priests, religious, and laity felt compelled to stand against it.

La Vie de Michel de Marillac, written by his devoted friend Nicolas Lefèvre de Lezeau, is here presented for the first time in its integrity. Important homme d’état, Michel de Marillac (1560-1632) served the French Crown as councillor in the Parlement de Paris, maître des requêtes under Henry IV, and conseiller du roi under Louis XIII. Become a conseiller d’état, he was named Surintendant des finances (from August 1624 to June 1626), then Garde des Sceaux until his disgrace in mid-November 1630, after the famous Day of Dupes. By his intelligence, energy, experience and probity, he was one of the most significant figures in the reign of Louis XIII. Marillac was the principal author of the Ordonnance de 1629, the largest ever codification of French law, which was known familiarly by his name: the “Code Michau”. Chief of the dévot party, he was among the most influential lay persons active in the establishment in France of the Reformed Carmelites (1602-1604), the Ursulines (1610) and the Oratorians (1611). He achieved one of the best translations of Thomas à Kempis’s Imitation of Christ and a translation of the Psalms, and was the author of several other scholarly works.
