This volume explores the genre of the historical novel and the variety of ways in which writers choose to represent the past. How does an author’s nationality or gender impact their artistic choices? To what extent can historical novels appeal to a transnational audience? This study demonstrates how histories can communicate across national borders, often by invoking or deconstructing the very notion of nationhood. Furthermore, it traces how the concerns of the postmodern era, such as postmodern critiques of historiography, colonialism, identity, and the Enlightenment, have impacted the genre of the historical novel, and shows this impact has not been uniform throughout Western culture. Not all historical novels written during the postmodern era are postmodern. The historical novel as a genre occupies a problematic, yet significant space in Cold War literary currents, torn between claims of authenticity and the impossibility of accessing the past. Historical novels from England, America, Germany, and France are compared and contrasted with historical novels from Sweden, testing a variety of theoretical perspectives in the process. This pitting of a center against a periphery serves to highlight traits that historical novels from the West have in common, but also how they differ. The historical novel is not just a local, regional phenomenon, but has become, during the postmodern era, a transnational tool for exploring how we should think of nations and nationalism and what a society should, or should not, look like.

Myth in the Modern Novel: Imagining the Absolute posits a twofold thesis. First, although Modernity is regarded as an era dominated by science and rational thought, it has in fact not relinquished the hold of myth, a more "primitive" form of thought which is difficult to reconcile with modern rationality. Second, some of the most important statements as to the reconcilability of myth and Modernity are found in the work of certain prominent novelists. This book offers a close examination of the work of eleven writers from the late eighteenth century to the beginning of the twenty-first, representing German, French, American, Czech and Swedish literature. The analyses of individual novels reveal a variety of intriguing views of myth in Modernity, and offer an insight into the "modernizing" transformations myth has undergone when applied in the modern novel. The study shows the presence of the "subconscious", the mythic layer, in modern western culture and how this has been dealt with in novelistic literature.

Cette étude sur Michel Tournier, un des écrivains français les plus importants de nos jours, se concentre sur les problèmes philosophiques qu'il pose dans son écriture, tout particulièrement sur la question du soi par rapport à autrui et son implication littéraire. Fasciné par la réécriture du mythe chez Tournier, ce travail étudie les textes littéraires de ce dernier d'une perspective nietschéenne. Le livre examine également de près comment la narration chez Tournier est informée par une remise en question du rationalisme, du colonialisme et des systèmes de valeur conventionnels, et comment sa notion d'une co-création de l'auteur/lecteur nous invite à dépasser l'antagonisme humain. Ayant montré que la conception de l'écriture et de la lecture chez Tournier s'intéresse à une création joyeuse au lieu d'une recherché obsessive du sens, il conclut par nous suggérer une correlation entre l'idéal de la «Grande Santé» chez Nietzsche et les motifs transcendants dans les récits de Tournier.
