Michelangelo at first did not want to paint the ceiling because he saw himself as sculptor and thought of the commission as trap of his rivals. Moreover, it was unusual for ceiling frescoes to show narration, they were in general regarded as minor compared to walls. Michelangelo, undeniably, taught art history better, his artwork became a masterpiece of High Renaissance. This essay is going to examine Michelangelo’s concerns in decorating the ceiling, especially in regard to the representation of narration and how successful his attempts were.

A counted cross-stitch pattern of the entire Sistine Chapel Ceiling. Included in the book are 45 full color, individual patterns (one for every scene) and instructions on how they may be stitched together, or individually. These patterns are not computer generated. They have been meticulously created one square at a time. This allowed me to to transform the curved Sistine Chapel Ceiling into a flat pattern. There are no special stitches in the pattern, not even backstitch (except the lettering on the signs). There are only 1/4, 3/4 and full cross-stitches. Also, all the different individual pieces have been designed to interlock with the scenes around them. Although you may find patterns of parts of the Sistine Chapel Ceiling elsewhere, as an aggregate you will not find a similar pattern anywhere. In 1985, when browsing a book on the Ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, Eurico Poggi was taken with the absolute certainty that the painting registered as Moses and the Bronze Serpent is the representation of a poem called The Hymn of the Pearl. Very popular in the ancient world, the poem was among the texts known as Acts of Thomas, by the Apostle Thomas. The connection of the poem with the famous paintings seemed non-existent. One day, Eurico Poggi found a short account of the first mass held in the Sistine Chapel. This account mentions that, in 1483, the Chapel was consecrated to Our Lady of the Assumption. Suddenly, Eurico Poggi recalls a Christian tradition that describes the Apostle Thomas as the only witness of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Intrigued, Eurico Poggi decided to look carefully at the symbolic elements present in the images of the Sistine Chapel Ceiling.
