Excerpt from Michell's Wholesale Price List of Bulbs, Seeds, Supplies: Autumn, 1904; September to November The bulbs should always be unpacked upon arrival and stored in a cool' place until required for planting. The great essential for successful flowering Tulips is good fresh soil in which no Tulips have previously been forced or grown, at least not for several years past. The following composition is recommended, viz.: two-thirds soil and one-third well-rotted cow manure. It is well that this should have lain in a compost heap at least two months previous and to have been turned several times during that period. By using this kind of soil you will get larger flowers and deeper colors. Soil used for potting or planting bulbs in should not be wet, inasmuch that if bulbs are pressed into moist soil it causes the soil to be compressed at the bottom of the bulb, where it hardens eventually and the roots cannot push through easily. Give Tulips ample space plant in boxes 20 inches long, 12 inches wide, 5 inches deep where used for cutting, plunge the bulb just deep enough to permit the top to be visible. Do not plunge the boxes outside so deep, as Tulips are invariably not so susceptible to freezing as Hyacinths. In the severest winter this method has proved best. In event that winter sets in too early, so that Tulips cannot root well, it is advisable to keep a reserve, or part of stock, covered in a winter-proof shed' previous to winter setting in. Most money can be made if they are forced early and gradually brought in to avoid an over-supply at Easter; at which time the price is lowest. The covering of Tulips with ashes is not recommended as they contain sulphurous gases. Leaye the covering, whatever it may be, on the boxes until they are brought in the'greenhouse, as a disregard of this might result in a total loss. They should never be taken out when once brought in. Complaints are usually made of Tulips showing watery or glazy stems, causing them to fall over just as they are about to come into bloom. This 15 caused by a close, stuffy atmosphere or lack of fresh air. This is especially visible when the severest part of winter is passed. Ventilation 1s essential day and night when there is no frost, the more the better. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Plant Root and the Rhizosphere was a major topical feature of the first International Symposium on Factors Determining the Behavior of Plant Pathogens in Soil held at the University of California, Berkeley in 1963. The symposium was edited by K. F. Baker and W. C. Snyder and published under the title Ecology of Soil-Borne Plant Pathogens. Since that time, several other international efforts, either on the root-soil interface specifically or on topics relating to the root environment, have provided"a wealth of valuable information basic to promoting the culture of healthier, more productive plants. For the writing of this book, inspiration has come, in large part, from 10 years of cooperative rhizosphere research in association with leading scientists participating in a regional effort within the southern United States. We have attempted to bring together in this work the major aspects of rhizosphere research and the principles of rhizosphere ecology for the benefit of developing young scientists and technologists, as well as for the established professional researcher and teacher. A prime objective and hope is that this volume might generate ideas that will bring forth new approaches and methodology leading to further advances in our understanding of rhizosphere interactions and their implications for agriculture. ' Because of the enormous complexity of the chemical, physical, and microbiological environment of roots, the methods used by various workers are rarely standardized, but must be devised or modified for each experiment.

Imagining Extinction written by Ursula K. Heise and has been published by University of Chicago Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2016-08-10 with Literary Criticism categories.

As the extinction of species accelerates and more species become endangered, activists, filmmakers, writers, and artists have responded to bring this global crisis to the attention of the public. Until now, there has been no study of the frameworks that shape these narratives and images, or of the symbolic meanings that the death of species carries in different cultural communities. Ursula Heise makes the case that understanding how and why endangered species come to matter culturally is indispensable for any effective advocacy on their behalf. Heise begins by showing that the tools of conservation science and law need to be viewed as cultural artifacts: biodiversity databases and laws for the protection of threatened species use rhetorical and cultural resources that open up different approaches to the problem of understanding global wildlife. The second half of her book explores ways of envisioning alternative futures for biodiversity. The narrative of nature s decline or even imminent disappearance has been a successful rallying trope for those skeptical of modernization and ideologies of progress. But environmentalists nostalgia for the past and pessimistic outlook on the future have also alienated parts of the public. Heise tells the story of environmental activists, writers, and scientists who are creating new stories to guide the environmental imagination."

Hoosiers And The American Story written by Madison, James H. and has been published by Indiana Historical Society this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-10 with Juvenile Nonfiction categories.

A supplemental textbook for middle and high school students, Hoosiers and the American Story provides intimate views of individuals and places in Indiana set within themes from American history. During the frontier days when Americans battled with and exiled native peoples from the East, Indiana was on the leading edge of America’s westward expansion. As waves of immigrants swept across the Appalachians and eastern waterways, Indiana became established as both a crossroads and as a vital part of Middle America. Indiana’s stories illuminate the history of American agriculture, wars, industrialization, ethnic conflicts, technological improvements, political battles, transportation networks, economic shifts, social welfare initiatives, and more. In so doing, they elucidate large national issues so that students can relate personally to the ideas and events that comprise American history. At the same time, the stories shed light on what it means to be a Hoosier, today and in the past.

The Century Of The Gene written by Evelyn Fox KELLER and has been published by Harvard University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2009-06-30 with Science categories.

In a book that promises to change the way we think and talk about genes and genetic determinism, Evelyn Fox Keller, one of our most gifted historians and philosophers of science, provides a powerful, profound analysis of the achievements of genetics and molecular biology in the twentieth century, the century of the gene. Not just a chronicle of biology’s progress from gene to genome in one hundred years, The Century of the Gene also calls our attention to the surprising ways these advances challenge the familiar picture of the gene most of us still entertain. Keller shows us that the very successes that have stirred our imagination have also radically undermined the primacy of the gene—word and object—as the core explanatory concept of heredity and development. She argues that we need a new vocabulary that includes concepts such as robustness, fidelity, and evolvability. But more than a new vocabulary, a new awareness is absolutely crucial: that understanding the components of a system (be they individual genes, proteins, or even molecules) may tell us little about the interactions among these components. With the Human Genome Project nearing its first and most publicized goal, biologists are coming to realize that they have reached not the end of biology but the beginning of a new era. Indeed, Keller predicts that in the new century we will witness another Cambrian era, this time in new forms of biological thought rather than in new forms of biological life.

The Ecology Of Urban Habitats written by Oliver Gilbert and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Science categories.

This book is about the plants and animals of urban areas, not the urban fringe, not encapsulated countryside but those parts of towns where man's impact is greatest. The powerful anthropogenic influences that operate in cities have, until recently, rendered them unattractive to ecologists who find the high proportion of exotics and mixtures of planted and spontaneous vegetation bewildering. They are also unused to considering fashion, taste, mowing machines and the behaviour of dog owners as habitat factors. I have always maintained, however, and I hope this book demonstrates, that there are as many interrelationships to be uncovered in a flower bed as in a field, in a cemetery as on a sand dune; and due to the well documented history of urban sites, together with the strong effects of management, they are frequently easier to interpret than those operating in more natural areas. The potential of these communities as rewarding areas for study is revealed in the literature on the pests of stored products, urban foxes and birds. The journals oflocal natural history societies have also provided a rich source of material as amateurs have never been averse to following the fortunes of their favourite groups into the heart of our cities. It is predictable that among the few professionals to specialize in this discipline have been those enclosed in West Berlin, who must be regarded as among the leading exponents of urban ecology.
