The second edition of the Fundamental Aspects of Pollution Control and Environmental Science 6: Microbiological Aspects of Pollution Control summarizes the advances in the use of microorganisms to remove pollutants from the environment and to recycle essential materials. It discusses practical aspects such as sewage treatment, the theoretical aspects, including the genetics of biodegradation of pesticides, and the ways in which the biochemical capabilities of microorganisms can be maximized. Comprised of 11 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of how microorganisms produce chemical pollutants, such as mycotoxins and phytotoxins. It then discusses how microorganisms can contribute to air pollution, the effect of air pollutants on microorganisms, and the health hazards arising from water-borne pathogens. The book also provides the assessment of the quality of surface waters, sewage or sewage effluents, and industrial effluents. It explains the microbiological examination of pharmaceutical products. Sewage treatment by methods such as biological filtration, disinfection and recycling of water; eutrophication; thermal pollution; sulfur cycle and waste recovery; oil pollution; and the process of biodegradation are also described. Engineers will find this book extremely helpful for the study of the microbiological aspects of pollution and possible solutions.

Microbial Aspects of Pollution is the first of a new series that emerged from the annual Summer Conference of Society for Applied Bacteriology, focusing on microbiological subjects of general topical interest. The subject of the 1971 symposium ""Microbial Aspects of Pollution"" is particularly topical. Pollution is an environmental problem and almost invariably arises from the activities of man. Micro-organisms have their part to play, both advantageously and disadvantageously, and the 16 contributions, written by recognized experts in the field, range widely over the subject. They include considerations of the health hazards of pollution, embracing the consequences of sewage pollution of our water supplies and a most important topic to the laboratory worker—the safe disposal of infected material. A series of papers deals with water purification problems and the disposal of sewage and other wastes, and their effects on the waters of rivers and lakes. Special attention is given in this context to the disposal of industrial wastes. Other contributions deal with the disposal of the newer industrial products of the organic chemist, namely, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and plastic materials.

Compiling knowledge gained through more than 50 years of experience in environmental engineering technology, this book illustrates the application of fundamental concepts in microbiology to provide a sound basis for the design and operation of various biological systems used in solving environmental challenges in the air, water, and soil. Environmental Pollution Control Microbiology emphasizes the quantitative relationships of microbial growth and metabolism, beginning an examination of the overall metabolism and resulting growth of bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa, rotifers, and other microorganisms and explains how bacteria bring about the stabilization of biodegradable organic pollutants.

Over the past two decades, the use of microbes to remove pollutants from contaminated air streams has become a widely accepted and efficient alternative to the classical physical and chemical treatment technologies. This book focuses on biotechnological alternatives, looking at both the optimization of bioreactors and the development of cleaner biofuels. It is the first reference work to give a broad overview of bioprocesses for the mitigation of air pollution. Essential reading for researchers and students in environmental engineering, biotechnology, and applied microbiology, and industrial and governmental researchers.

Microorganisms To Combat Pollution written by E. Rosenberg and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Science categories.

This volume contains material first presented at an international workshop on the 'Use of Microorganisms to Combat Pollution', held in Israel, May 10--18, 1992. The workshop was sponsored by the Bat-Sheva de Rothschild Foundation for the Advancement of Science and included microbiologists, biochemists and geneticists from universities, environmental agencies and the military. Each of the contributors to this volume is an ack nowledged expert on the treatment of one or more types of pollution using microorganisms or their enzymes. This book differs from most published symposia proceedings in the breadth of coverage of each subject. Most of the chapters are divided into three parts: (a) A general presentation of the source and toxicity of the pollutant, (b) a review of the current state-of-the-science on the biodegradation of that pollutant and (c) the authors' unique research experiences on the problem. In several examples, the authors have presented data from both laboratory studies and field trials. Thus, the book contains not only the theoretical background on the biodegradation of pollutants, but also practical experiences in applying this knowledge to solving significant pollution problems.
