This book provides for the first time the microfoundations of evolutionary economics. It enables the reader to grasp a new framework for economic analysis that is compatible with evolutionary processes. Any independent economics must contain a value theory (or price theory) and price and quantity adjustment processes. Evolutionary economics rightly and successfully concentrated its efforts on explaining evolutionary processes in technology and institutions. However, it did not have its own value theory and could not explain the workings of everyday economics processes, in which any evolutionary processes would take place. Our point of departure is myopic agents with strongly limited rationality and forecasting capacities (in extreme contrast to mainstream economics). We show how myopic agents, in a complex world, can produce a stable price system and observe how they can adjust their productions to the changes of demand flows. Agents behave without knowledge of the total process and they generate a stable economy as large as the global network of exchanges. This is a true wonder of the market mechanism. In contrast to mainstream general equilibrium theory, this wonder is finely explained without the help of an auctioneer or the concepts of demand and supply functions. With this book, evolutionary economics can claim to be an independent economics that can totally replace mainstream neoclassical economics.

The Microfoundations of Diaspora Politics examines the various actors within and beyond the state that participate in the design and implementation of diaspora policies, as well as the mechanisms through which diasporas are constructed by governments, political parties, diaspora entrepreneurs, or international organisations. Extant theories are often hard-pressed to capture the empirical variation and often end up identifying ‘exceptions’. The multidisciplinary group of contributors in this book theorise these ‘exceptions’ through three interrelated conceptual moves: first, by focusing on understudied aspects of the relationships between states as well as organised non-state actors and their citizens or co-ethnics abroad (or at home - in cases of return migration). Second, by examining dyads of ‘origin’ states and specific diasporic communities differentiated by time of emigration, place of residence, socio-economic status, migratory status, generation, or skills. Third, by considering migration in its multiple spatial and temporal phases (emigration, immigration, transit, return) and how they intersect to constitute diasporic identities and policies. These conceptual moves facilitate comparative research and help scholars identify the mechanisms connecting structural variables with specific policies by states (and other actors) as well as responses by the relevant diasporic communities. This book was originally published as a special issue of the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies.

How do institutions influence and shape cognition and action in individuals and organizations, and how are they in turn shaped by them? Various social science disciplines have offered a range of theories and perspectives to provide answers to this question. Within organization studies in recent years, several scholars have developed the institutional logics perspective. An institutional logic is the set of material practices and symbolic systems including assumptions, values, and beliefs by which individuals and organizations provide meaning to their daily activity, organize time and space, and reproduce their lives and experiences. This approach affords significant insights, methodologies, and research tools, to analyze the multiple combinations of factors that may determine cognition, behaviour, and rationalities. In tracing the development of the institutional logics perspective from earlier institutional theory, the book analyzes seminal research, illustrating how and why influential works on institutional theory motivated a distinct new approach to scholarship on institutional logics. The book shows how the institutional logics perspective transforms institutional theory. It presents novel theory, further elaborates the institutional logics perspective, and forges new linkages to key literatures on practice, identity, and social and cognitive psychology. It develops the microfoundations of institutional logics and institutional entrepreneurship, proposing a set of mechanisms that go beyond meta-theory, integrating this work with macro theory on institutional logics into a cross-levels model of cultural heterogeneity.
