The general trend towards miniaturisation and parallelism in optics and electro-optics has led to a requirement for arrays of sub-millimetre sized lenses. Thus, the demand for these microlens arrays has increased dramatically over recent years. Dan Daly's book describes the technology of microlens arrays and provides a recipe for producing them. It surveys the many fabrication techniques and discusses the numerous applications which either require or enhanced by the use of microlens arrays. This book gives a full description of the processes involved in production and limitations of the techniques. Processes looked at include the Thermal Reflow of Photoresist technique and the Silicon Elastomer Replication Process. As the measurement of microlenses is an intrinsic part of the production process, the methods which can be used to evaluate lens performance are explained.

Microlens arrays contain multiple lenses formed in a one-dimensional or two-dimensional array on a supporting substrate. With optical sensor arrays tiny lens systems serve to focus and concentrate the light onto the photodiode surface instead of allowing it to fall on non-photosensitive areas of the pixel device. Fill-factor area occupied by the microlens arrays. Mostly, the lens shape is cylindrical or spherical. Array size strongly depends on the applications. It can range from 1x2 for optical switch applications up to more than 103x103 for diffusers or display applications. Single microlens is used to couple light to optical fibers while microlens arrays are often used to increase the light collection efficiency of charge-coupled device (CCD) array. They collect and focus light that would have otherwise fallen on to the non-sensitive areas of the CCD. Microlens arrays are also used in some digital projectors, to focus light to the active areas of the LCD used to generate the image to be projected. Current research also relies on microlens of various types to act as concentrators for high efficiency photovoltaic for electricity production"

Microoptics Technology written by Nicholas F. Borrelli and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2017-11-13 with Technology & Engineering categories.

It has been five years since the publication of the first edition of Microoptics Technology. In that time, optical technology has experienced an unparalleled burst of activity that has produced a body of significant real results that have advanced new materials, devices, and systems. Building on the foundation of the first edition, this comprehensive reference presents an introduction and review of the optics and methods of microoptic elements with particular emphasis on lenses and lens arrays. The author explores advances that emerged from the flurry of activity over the last five years. With two new chapters and another fully expanded, the book covers current and new methods of fabrication of microlenses, as well as refractive, GRIN, and diffractive methods. It also includes chapters on optical devices that utilize the microoptic fabrication methods, including micro-diffraction gratings and optical isolators, together with a discussion of a number of important applications. See what's new in the Second Edition: Coverage of negative refractive index materials Information on femto second laser interaction with materials Chapter on photonic crystal has been extensively expanded The first edition was the first resource to collect all microlens fabrication methods into a single volume. With more than 600 references, tables, equations, drawings, and photographs, Microoptics Technology, Second Edition replaces its predecessor as the gold standard reference in this field.

The study and application of microscale lenses and lens arrays enjoys a long history. Advances in microfabrication technologies in the past few decades have enabled the design and fabrication of microlenses and microlens arrays through many different approaches. In recent years, there has been notably a host of exciting developments in the microlenses and microlens arrays, including tunable-focus ones, those fabricated on non-planar substrates and surfaces, and microlens arrays mimicking natural compound eyes, to name just a few. The developments in microlenses and microlens arrays have found profound applications in many engineering and biomedical fields, including but not limited to optical coherence tomography (OCT), endoscopy, photolithography, 3-dimensional imaging, optical communications, and lab on chips. This Special Issue aims to highlight the state of the art in the development of microlenses and microlens arrays; examples being fabrication technologies and optical characterizations. It also focuses on their applications when implemented in microoptical systems.
