Distant metastases are the main cause of cancer-related death. The onset of the metastatic process can now be assessed in cancer patients by the use of immunocytochemical and molecular methods that allow the identification of disseminated carcinoma cells in regional lymph nodes, peripheral blood or distant organs. There is increasing evidence that the detection and characterization of tumor cells present in bone marrow or peripheral blood can provide clinically important information. In this book, leading experts in the area of micrometastasis research provide an overview that summarizes the current state of research on micrometastatic disease in patients with solid tumors. In each chapter, the technical aspect as well as clinical relevance of micrometastasis detection is discussed. The book addresses basic researchers as well as clinicians involved in the treatment of cancer patients.

The fact that tumors are composed of both tumor cells and host cells has long been known. These tumor-associated cells include vascular endothelial cells and pe- cytes, as well as inflammatory cells such as neutrophils, monocytes, macrophages, mast cells and eosinophils, and lymphocytes. The tumor cells also interact with stromal cells and with elements of the tissue extracellular matrix. What has been less appreciated is the role that these cells could have in modulating the growth, invasion, and metastasis of the tumor. Early on, the elements of what we now call the tumor microenvironment were considered to be more or less innocent bysta- ers to the role of the tumor cells as they grew and invaded local sites. Today, there is an increased understanding of the critical role of the tumor microenvironment as dramatically influencing the course of tumor development and dissemination. This volume represents a superb compilation of the latest thoughts and data regarding the role of each essential component of the tumor microenvironment in cancer development and progression. Perhaps, the earliest recognition of the role of nonmalignant cells as cancer re- lators was the recognition that lymphocytes can participate in what was termed “immune surveillance” in the 1960s. Our understanding of tumor immunity has improved markedly since then, and there are now successful clinical studies sh- ing the potential use of immune-based therapies in cancer treatment.

Lymph Node Metastasis In Gastrointestinal Cancer written by Shoji Natsugoe and has been published by Springer this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019-01-23 with Medical categories.

This book provides the most comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of lymph node micrometastasis (LMM) and sentinel node navigation surgery (SNNS) in gastrointestinal cancers. Lymph node metastasis is a critically important prognostic factor in gastrointestinal tract cancers such as tumors of the esophagus, stomach, and colorectum. An understanding of the basic aspects of lymphatics and lymph nodes, including anatomy, histology, physiology, immunology, and molecular biology, is fundamental for physicians who are involved in cancer treatment. Furthermore, owing to the development of molecular and biological methodology, the precise recognition of LMM and its clinical significance have been clarified recently. At the same time, SNNS has actually been anticipated in treatment of breast tumors, and it is now being introduced in gastrointestinal tract cancer. For the application of SNNS, the detection of lymph node metastasis including LMM is extremely significant, because the presence of LMM determines the direction for surgery and chemo and/or radiation therapy. With these considerations in mind, the expert contributors to this book review basic and clinical approaches for LMM and SNNS including methodology for gastrointestinal cancers. Thus this volume benefits not only surgeons who treat gastrointestinal cancers but also clinical oncologists and medical scientists such as physiologists and pathologists.
