The effective utilization of energy, raw materials, metals and manpower in a dynamically developing society calls for the development of materials of unconventional properties and for high endurance and reliability in operation. The responses of various materials to unidirectional or repeated mechanical stress has already been examined, estimated, classified and quantified for more than two centuries. In spite of this, it is not possible at present to generalize the sophisticated processes occurring in the microplasticity and failure of materials. However, it is possible to offer a more or less compact physico-metallurgical interpretation of such limiting states as plastic flow and material failure. The better utilization of latent properties requires thorough knowledge of the physical essence of the critical processes occurring in materials under mechanical loading. This book makes use of the accumulated knowledge of elementary processes in microplasticity and failure, complemented by the latest knowledge from the world literature and by the results the author and his collaborators have obtained. No publication to date provides such data in one volume.

An integral review is given in this book on the fatigue phenomenon covering the fundamentals of fatigue damage initiation, relevant factors influencing fatigue crack propagation and fatigue life, random load analysis, and simulation for theoretical and experimental fatigue life assessment. The entire chain of problems related to fatigue of metals and structural components is covered. Specifically, it describes the low-cycle plastic properties and statistically interprets the material stress reaction, examining original results of investigations on inelastic deformations under high cycle cyclic loading and correlating them with a number of use parameters. The limit states of bodies with primary defects and their resistance to fatigue crack propagation are discussed. Measurements, analysis and real-time modelling of operating loads for experimental fatigue life verification are reviewed as well as introducing some new fatigue damage accumulation hypotheses based on dissipated energy. Various operating and environmental factors of the fatigue life are analyzed, including temperature, metal structures, corrosive environment, stress-strain amplitudes and their changes, random load (strain) properties, stress gradient frequency, mean level, etc. The work is intended for all those involved in research and development in the metal, machine and structure fields.

This book reviews problems in the mechanical behaviour of cyclically loaded metallic materials, primarily with regard to the nature of the fatigue process. The first edition of the book appeared in 1980. The present second edition represents a revised form of the original book and also covers recent developments in the field. As the book focuses on physical-metallurgical aspects, it occupies a unique and important position in the technical literature, which has so far been devoted mainly to engineering metal fatigue problems and their technical solution in specific practical cases. The book provides a compact review of current knowledge on physical metallurgical processes that accompany and affect the fatigue of metallic materials, and also presents the background for applying the new results to practical designing and to the selection of materials in engineering practice. The authors present an updated review of results from countries both in the east and the west and cover a relatively large field in a concise manner. The work will be of value to research workers and students following advanced and post-graduate courses in the fields of materials science and mechanical engineering.

Maintaining the integrity of nuclear power plants is critical in the prevention or control of severe accidents. This monograph deals with both basic groups of structural materials used in the design of light-water nuclear reactors, making the primary safety barriers of NPPs. Emphasis is placed on materials used in VVER-type nuclear reactors: Cr-Mo-V and Cr-Ni-Mo-V steel for RPV and Zr-Nb alloys for fuel element cladding. The book is divided into 7 main chapters, with the exception of the opening one and the chapter providing a phenomenological background for the subject of radiation damage. Chapters 3-6 are devoted to RPV steels and chapters 7-9 to zirconium alloys, analysing their radiation damage structure, changes of mechanical properties due to neutron irradiation as well as factors influencing the degree of their performance degradation. The recovery of damaged materials is also discussed. Considerable attention is paid to a comparison of VVER-type and western-type light-water materials. This monograph will be of great value to postgraduate students in nuclear engineering and materials science, and for designers and research workers in nuclear energy.

VarietyisperhapsthemostamazingattributeofNature, withanalmostendlessarrayof different molecules and aggregates and tens of millions of distinct forms of life. Yet, in spite of this bewildering diversity, there are some common patterns, henceforth called “phenomenological universalities,” that are found over and over again in completely different contexts. A quest for universalities is not only interesting per se, but can also yield practical applications. If several elds share a common mathematical or conceptual background, a cross-fertilization among them may lead to quick progress, even if ultimately the speci c details of any individual application must be considered independently. We all know that we live in a nonlinear world, although scientists have often tried to linearize it, sometimes as a rst step towards understanding its complexity, often because, before the advent of ubiquitous high computational power, a linear appro- mation was the only viable alternative. In this book we use the term “nonclassical n- linearity” with reference to a particularly intriguing kind of phenomenology, which has been extensively investigated in the last decade in the elds of elasticity and g- materials and whose universality has been conjectured. Its signatures are hystereticity, discrete memory, and other effects which, in the case of continuum mechanics, have been called “fast” and “slow” dynamics.

In the fall of 1998, Prof. Sergey Firstov invited me to the Frantcevych Institute for Problems of Materials Science (IPMS) in Kyiv, Ukraine to discuss possible collaborations in the area of advanced metals research. During this visit, a strong mutual interest was evident in a broad range of structural metals technologies, and a quick friendship was established. Countless subsequent emails and a reciprocal visit to the U. S Air Force Research Laboratory by Prof. Firstov and a team of scientists from IPMS ensued to discuss and detail a broad collaboration in the area of structural metals. Two years after the initial visit, a major investment by the U. S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) was established to pursue the technologies defined by these interactions. The annual reviews of the AFOSR Ukrainian Metals Initiative were held in late May, a most beautiful time in Kyiv when the lilacs are in bright display and the air is scented with the smell of falling blossoms from the chestnut trees that line the major streets and many parks. The sunny days and mild evenings provide a welcome break from winter, and on weekend evenings festive crowds spill onto the Khreshchatyk, Kyiv’s downtown boulevard, to listen to street musicians, watch jugglers and comedians, or simply to celebrate with friends. The annual reviews featured long days of intensive discussion of technical progress, followed in the evenings by the warm hospitality of the Ukrainian hosts.
